Moving a mature Clematis Vine...

I'm wondering if I may have just killed my Clematis. The poor thing had it's trellis removed when we re-sided the house, and was growing like a ground cover, so I decided to move to an entirely new spot with a new trellis. I didn't realize how wide spread the root system was until I had it out of the ground and saw that I had severed a substantial number of roots. I was surprised that it didn't act shocky even several hours after I transplanted it, but I'm still wondering if it will make it. Have any of you moved mature Clematis vines? I'm also wondering if it might help the plant if I trim back some of the foliage. Kathy
