Not sure what you mean by "red layer split" - if the bulb is forming small individual cloves, then it is time to harvest, also the tops are quite dry. It is a temptation to harvest them early. If you intend to keep them in your kitchen - a braid perhaps, it is best to dry them well once they are pulled. I usually toss mine in a dry spot for awhile, until they are completely ready. Bejay

Roberta, What I do when I have a mess of chicks is wait until the first egg or two starts to appear. Then you can start the layer rations. We also offer a mix of standard grit and oyster shell on the side. Cats and chickens do co-exist (to my initial amazement). Just keep young chicks away from the cats as this just might be a tad too tempting. And yes, throw them a handful of cheap cat food especially during the summer when their protein intake is down. Hey there. My sister's family lives in the Springs so I know a little bit about the weather there and it can be tricky. There are at least a couple of people in that area who do some greenhouse growing and have ponds but I don't know the names to give you. I know one of them is retired military but that won't be much help. Maybe you could make a connection through a garden club or pond club. They would be able to give you the facts for that area. A lot of it is going to depend on how much money and time you are able to throw at the problems you will have and the details of the greenhouse itself. Have you grown anything in the greenhouse or is this something new to you? The biggest factor is likely to be heat build-up, then shading and particularly where you live, the humidity or lack thereof. Are your plants going to be grown from seed or from clumps? Your carnivorous plants will most likely be bog plants and they will need correct timing in cool conditions to get them to flourish. Most of the plants can be searched to get the info on length of dormancy, light requirements, etc. There are several good references that can do that and if you don't want to invest in one of those right away, check out the library. If it was my setup, I would construct a small indoor pond inside the greenhouse even if it was just a kid's wading pool and start from there. If you started now and were pretty quick about it you could have it done and ready to catch the right conditions for each of your plants. Most of them like plenty of light but you have to strike a balance to prevent them from cooking in the direct sunlight through the glass. It is also a good thing to have the greenhouse throughly clean. That was always the first chore I did when I had my greenhouse in Wisconsin and it paid off in reduced loss due to fungus and bacterial diseases. With the use of heat pads under the flats, I could start in January with snow piled up 3 or 4 feet against the glass without heating the whole thing. I have taken rose canes, a few inches from the tip, knicked them and burried them w/ a brick or good sized rock to hold tehm down. Wait several weeks, then tug gently, if it holds, there are roots. Leave it another month then dig it up, cut from main stem and pot on or plant in ground. I also, put my climber tips in under other pots for winter and have several new ones in the spring. I have taken dormant rose cuttings and rooted them in water over winter. Took a long time to root. I now have two pots of 2 kinds of roses,one a pink climber & the other a single petal white, very healthy. Last winter I kept them in my cold basement stairway because they were so young.
