Where to buy bare root peonies

I purchased several bare root peonies labeled Sarah Bernhardt from a big box store and although they are very pretty and I'm keeping them, they don't look like Sarah to me.

Can anyone recommend a good on-line source for bare root peonies for fall planting?

Though they don't have a huge selection, I can recommend John Scheepers. I bought 2 peonies a couple years ago, and they were very nice sized for the price. Both bloomed this year were the correct varieties.

Try Dutch Gardens. I've always gotten nice bulbs/roots from them. You'll probably have to wait until fall shipping, though, for bare root peonies.

There are so many varieties of peonies that look similar, Redroses. What performs well in my zone 4B garden might grow like crazy or languish in the heat of your zone 6 garden. I'd suggest going to gardens with peonies in your immediate area and zeroing in on the ones that perform best there, saves you the heartbreak of babying roots that will never perform the best in your area. Cheddar Charm is a Klehm peony bred from Bowl of Cream. It's a Japanese that blooms mid-season for peonies so should be done before the heat of summer for you. I'd probably not try it here because Bowl of Cream has been one of my dismal failures, probably because of our late snows every spring. Just because one or both of the parents do poorly doesn't necessarily doom the child plant but...... The APS website has a listing of peony gardens by state if you're not sure what's in your area. I think Karen shared the list here last year as well if you just want to go back through a lot of the old posts, I do that sometimes in the winter when the weather's too bad to go outside. It's amazing how much info is posted here that I miss in the busy-ness of spring/summer that I collect later!

Nothing local. The King County Conservation District does have a bare root native plant sale in early spring each year but only includes locally native species - Doug firs, western red cedars, a few different spruces, etc. No redwoods. There are some excellent native plant nurseries in the area that do carry a broader range of Pacific coast natives but not bare root seedlings - just larger potted plants. And better local retail nurseries will have a similar offering but seldom, if ever, seedlings and never bare root - what they call "retail ready" plants, with generally the smallest a 1G potted plant. But even those are difficult to locate - larger specimens of named cultivars are far more common. You may just be looking at mail order sources.

You can put them out on warm days and bring them in on cold days and nights if you want. They will do better that way and take less hardening off since they have broken dormancy than if you try to grow them by a basement window. A wheelbarrow to easily move them into and out of the garage, or just take the plants out as you head out to work if the temperatures are above freezing. If it's any comfort, after my grandmother died, I divided and brought back a couple Festiva Maxima peony roots from plants that my grandfather had planted many years prior. This was mid-July, and they survived and grew just fine after a couple of days wrapped in damp paper towels. So I imagine that at least some of yours should survive.

Hortico probably has some varieties left. https://www.hortico.com/roses/roses.asp Palatine does an annual sale of older Austin varieties, but I think they are done taking orders for the season. You could give them a call. I only know of those 2 vendors because they ship to the states. I'm sure there are more. -Chris

I have bought from Peonys Envy in New Jersey. They were generous and healthy with a fabulous selection and helpful staff, but frankly the name is so great I am waiting for the tee shirts to come out (they are working on that as well!!)

Here is another small nursery for your consideration. They also hybridize and sell their own introductions. I like the way they classify the peonies by landscape variety, aka. ones that don't require staking.
