I had terrific luck with poppies by winter sowing them. I planted the seedlings out in March and when it got really cold, they didn't mind at all because they grew in containers which were in the cold for weeks. I think you will find them very easy to do. Carrie

Hi, I WS anything in the cabbage(brassica) family. They all will sprout in cool temps, so you will get an early start with them. Lettuce is the same way. I WS herbs, dill, Amsterdam celery, fennel, hyssop, basil, borage, etc. I have Cilantro come back for me, so it winter sows naturally here. It should be able to be WSed. Rhubarb does really well. Peas are direct sowed early so WSing is not necessary. The ones that I know that have a tendency to rot and not germinate are beans and corn. Squash need to be direct sown or transplanted when there are just a few true leaves. If the plants get too big, they don't recover well from transplanting and can be stunted. Eggplant like warm temps to germinate and grow. So even if it does get warm enough to get germination early, cold temps after germination can stunt growth, so it is best to grow them indoors and transplant when night temps stay above 50. Many people here have success WSing tomatoes. I can't comment on that. I grow them indoors because I keep track of each variety and transplant them into single cells. It just wouldn't work for me to WS them. Hope that helped some : ) Remy

Awesome Tom! :D I can't wait to see them next year! I saw a matured hollyhock on google and it was gorgeous! By the way, I can't stop myself from posting these pics I took just few minutes ago. They were direct seeded. My camera had a very hard time focusing on it. I can't describe what I was witnessing on my calendula flowers. They just opened today. The orange was like neon orange. It wasn't flat. It's totally unbelievable. The yellow inside was shocking because it was glowing right on my face! I love the black center too! The picture is still far from what I am seeing and doesn't give enough justice to it. I felt a little worried when the leaves were growing. They didn't look nice. But I kept my patience and now it has rewarded me. :D hehehe Anyways, here it is!

Hi Poppy power, Yep you are the grandma! LOL My poppies did very well this year. I was really happy with them thank you fro sharing the seed last year. We had a lot of snow last year I dont know if that helped or not. Getting ready to start up the daylilly seeds for the year they are getting nice and cold in the fridge and should be ready to start. We will have cups everywhere agian this winter. Medo I didnt save seeds from this one I was too late and didnt mark it. I only have a few seeds left from last year I was planning on ws them. The name is china white if you want to ask someone for them. They are big poppies. I had them with laurens grape and a double pink with a blue eye. It was a sight. I plan on doing tons and tons of ws poppy containers this winter. I cant wait to try my blue one I bought. I think that one will be neat too. Barb
