Comments (31)Thanks for the suggestions. Hmm, I don't have much space and Hidcote looks like it needs some space, am I wrong? So what I have been contemplating is Blue: Balloon flower (bit disappointed if it is short flowering) Salvia nemorosa or Friesland What about campanula pritchard's variety?? Red: Centranthus ruber (do others like it?) Sidalcea hybrida (I have since heard this is pink so might drop it.) Other suggestions for red? Keep in mind the spot is not very large, is part sun and gets about 4-5 hours of morning sun. I had three royal candles last summer, looked great but they all got mildew....See MoreYour favorite blue perennial? Especially sand lovers!
Comments (16)I think the S. chamaedryoides can take some summer water, but it has to be well drained and it doesn't tolerate frost well. Its native to the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico and it wants full sun. I guess it might be treated more as an annual elsewhere, but its a perennial here in SoCal. Here's what California Gardens says: Salvia chamaedryoides generally stays below 1 foot tall and spreads to about 3'. The Germander Sage blooms spring and summer with a smattering of blooms in the fall. Cutting off the blooms is tedious but will extend the season. I often cut back the tips of the branches to freshen up the growth. Salvia chamaedryoides is weak in the shade and performs best in full south facing sunlight. We have had no frost damage to Salvia chamaedryoides with minimum temperatures as low as 16 degrees F. But dogs and kids will destroy these brittle plants if they go running through. This is a good addition to the hummingbird garden and the butterfly garden....See MoreFavorite Blues?
Comments (47)Annie, I can't tell you for sure what the specific cultivar of macropetala clematis the one is that I posted. It was purchased at Lowes and labeled as an alpina 'Constance' which is a hot pink color--definitely not what I got. Considering it was purchased at Lowes, it may very well be the species macropetala and not one of the hybrids. The pictures of it on COTW often show a lot of the blue clematis as having more pink than blue in them. I am not sure if it is just the lighting or if in England the weather and soil conditions change the perceived color. Rootdigger, if you want to see more pictures of my clematis, you should check out my Photobucket account linked below. I must admit I didn't take very many pictures this past season but have quite a few on there from 2004. Also, I can attest to the fact that Betty Corning is fragrant. Picked blooms this spring and brought them into the house and you could definitely smell the fragrance once you entered the room they were in. A plant outside can also perfume your garden once it gets large enough to support many flowers. Also, the fragrance tends to be more pronounced when the air is still and heavy. Mine hasn't gotten to that stage yet but I am awaiting the day. Here is a link that might be useful: Miguel's Photobucket account...See Moreblue blue blue
