Rose Rustling and Rose Propagation

Founder of Gold Coast Heritage Rose Group and consulting American Rose Society rosarian, Jeri Jennings with her husband Clay, will get you excited about Rose Rustling and the history of documenting, collecting and preserving old, rare, and endangered roses. After the talk in the Visitor Center, youÂll move to the Heritage Rose Garden where, surrounded by a unique collection of antique and modern roses, youÂll learn about rose propagation with rosarian, Mel Hulse. All new Rose Rustlers will get to take home a bagged rose cutting ready to grow roots.

The workshop will meet at the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens Visitor & Education Center, located at 438 Coleman Avenue, San Jose, CA. Sounds wonderful! Wished I could come! I was just up there for the Sacramento Cemetery Rose Sale and I did visit the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden. This sounds so marvelous! Why can't we can any of these events in the Southland! Seems Northern California has the most interesting rose events!

We REALLY need to do some of these things down here in Southern California. Where there's a will -- there's a way.

"I have to wonder how many old Roses have become infected by unknowing Rustlers, carrying mites on their clothing, or using cutting tools not disinfected between roses" Something to know about the vector mites: they move on when they find they haven't landed on a rose. So the likelihood of them moving on someone's clothing is very slim. Only if someone were working with infected multiflora, and if it were the time of year when the mite populations surge, and if the mite happened to mistake a cotton or polyester for a rose cane...... odds are against this happening. The attempt to spread RRD (detailed in Doderick's MS and papers) by injecting fresh RRD-carrying plant material into rose canes failed. The thing about secateurs is that the cut is across xylem and phloem and may start as a crush of the cells. Crushed cells don't make good recipient spaces. And, once again, remember we can't prove a negative. We can only look at odds. We can't prove that no mite was ever carried on clothing. We can't prove cutting edge transfer of the Virus. So what is suggested remains a possibility, but IMO a very slight possibility. And, yes, I also clean my Felcos and my big loppers obsessively, just in case.

Carrie, Maggie was found at a plantation in LA..survived many years without care, as I recall the story. If the white rose is a China and we knew came from my garden, it would have to be Ducher. I've looked at your pictures and my Duchers..still not absolutely sure but a good bet. Ron says his young Duchers have small blooms.

Good to have all this information. Since we just had a cold snap come through, I brought it inside for a few days. I didn't want it to freeze. I keep it on my patio where I go out everyday to water my other containers or just enjoy the backyard pond or oay in the hammock in the shade. ;-) Gotta have a nice place to relax after working in the garden, right?

I have picked up plenty of roses from the side of a road on abandoned property. However, if the rose is in a front yard I always engage the property owner about the rose, perhaps tell them a little history, and encourage them to cherish it. Then I ask for a cutting or a bit of root. I have gone back to some properties year after year, particularly if they have a collection of old roses and chat with the property owner about how the plants are doing and offer approbation if the property owner has taken more attentive care of the rose. I frequently find that once a property owner understands that they have something special, the rose the following year will be weeded and fertilized and looks much happier. Actually, we did give the same talk a couple of months ago, for California Coastal Rose Society down in Carlsbad. We're always happy to do that, when we don't have a previous commitment.

We're going to speak at ARE for the Fall Seminar, but I'm not sure whether that will be THAT talk, or a different one.

Well, of course I will be visiting my friend in Santa Barbara that weekend. I understand I will be missing a few Nor Cal events that weekend. I guess there is always next year. Sorry to miss your presentation, Jeri.

Jeri, I found the PBS podcast of your interview with Queena Kim on rose rustling. I realize that PBS was probably handling all the production on that--but it was (and is) great.

The point being-- it sure would be nice to have some of these things available for listening via podcast.
