Amending a garden bed with clay like soil

After years of gardening, I should have known better! I dug up a garden bed that had lots of invasive plants and weeds that I thought were plants. The soil in this bed has always been extremely hard and clay like in parts. I turned the soil and added some peat moss, replanted the perennials and added ordinary mulch. I realize now (late!!) that I should have asked for suggestions before replanting.

I have been getting some suggestions from my post in the perennial forum, but it was recommended that I post here as well. I live in the city, and usually add some mushroom compost every spring. This year my garden centers were out at the time I was doing this task.

It was recommended that I dig some holes alongside my perennials and bury organic mulch. Does anyone have any recommendations of what to spread around my plants and in the dirt to help breakup the soil and improve the quality?
