Seeking advice re: organic material for clay soil

Hi,

In a little over a week, I start working at a summer camp, providing environmental education. In a small area next to the campÂs playground, IÂve opened a 3Â x 20Â bed to create a perennial butterfly garden.

ItÂs a heavy clay soil so I plan on sticking mostly to plants that I hope will tolerate this soil condition relatively well, including Rubecia,, Echinacea, and bee balm.

Next Tues is the first day of camp and the day I will be planting the garden with the kids. In the interim, I would like to work some sand and organic material into the soil to improve its condition.

I donÂt have access to compost so IÂm looking at picking up some bags of something at the local garden center. I would appreciate recommendations for what I should purchase: humus, peat moss, garden soil or something else, keeping in mind I need to do this as inexpensively as possible.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John
