Speaking of Veronica...
I just rescued three Veronica plants from my local Lowes bargain table- two "Giles VanHess" and one "Red Fox", for $2 each. They are in half gallon pots sitting in cutsie hot pink metal buckets. The plants don't look too bad, just in need of some dead-heading and I suspect are probably close to root-bound. I plan on putting them in the ground so their roots can stretch out. Anybody have any other suggestions to give these Gals a boost? Thanks, Kathy

That's so funny you say that. I was searching frantically for a few more "Sunny Border Blue"'s to fill out some empty spaces in my garden and couldn't find any for the longest time. And the last 2-3 years, all the big box stores and nurseries had lots of both types.

I'm guessing that the patent fee on both of them was too high and the stores decided to stock other varieties. (I also noticed the same problem looking for Coreopsis "Moonbeam" - lots of generic C. Vert. but no "Moonbeam.")

In the end, by the way, I got lucky. I was at a HD, utterly disgusted, when I saw pots of Veronica with big colorful labels that only said "Veronica." I figured it was just a generic type, but it looked an awful lot like what I wanted and when I pulled aside some leaves, there was a smaller stick-label that said "Sunny Border Blue." Bingo!

So maybe, if you are looking at HD, it would pay to look close at any Veronicas with prostrate foliage because it might be "Goodness Grows" with a hidden label.

That aside, I haven't read that "Royal Candles" outblooms (or even keeps up with) either "Goodness" or "Sunny". I'd keep looking.

I've grown Royal Candles for the past three years. It's a very heavy rebloomer for me and the foliage stays neat the whole summer.

I don't know how tall Goodness Grows gets, but Royal Candles is only about a foot high. Love those bright blue blooms! Very low maintenance plant.

Is it easy to grow Veronica from seeds?

Ive grown 'Royal Candles' for six years now. Its a great plant. The color is the truest blue. I have five of them around the yard, all from divisions of the original plant. Give it a bit of deadheading and it will bloom a long time. It is rather on the short side though.
Ps. Ive grown "Red Fox" and its just a whimp. It produces a stingy amount of flowers, and always seems to have something funky going on with the leaves. "Eveline" is a much better one. It has fuschia colored spikes. It often gets yellow/black spotted foliage, but noting too bad. I also just bought an "Icycle" Veronica from Lowes.

moonsinger, I grew veronica Blue Carpet from seed last year, and it did quite well for me. It bloomed this year (still blooming) and I am really enjoying it as an edger to one of my beds. I plan on starting more from seed next spring.

That's interesting, CMK. My Red Fox is a champ. I never have any trouble with the foliage. It puts on quite a show the first time, although rebloom after dead-heading is not great.

I'm going to try Royal Candles on these recommendations, though.
