has anyone flown with an animal recently?

If I move to Houston, my intention was to transport my cat there by flying. When I moved from houston, I gave my cat a tranq. and she sat on my lap in a carrier in the plane and it was easy.

Nowadays, I have to figure that I might spend a long time in the airport, and this cat is older, so worry about tranquilizing her. [altho that is not an option - has to be done.]

I wonder if they even allow animals on board, as they used to, and if they would scan or grope my cat.

Anyone have any experiences since the new tsa procedures?

The last time I flew with my cat was in 2006. She was not tranquilized, and she did quite well - she was so quiet I don't think anyone knew there was a cat in the bag.

The charge for her to fly was $50; when making reservations, be sure that the animal will be allowed on the flight. They allow only two animals per flight - and that is only one animal per passenger. The animal will have to fit in a carrier that can be placed under the seat.

Yes, they will make you take the animal out of the carrier and go through whatever scanning you have to endure.

Again this was in 2006. There may be more stringent regulations now, and no doubt the charge will be higher. Check the TSA website, and the website of your airline of choice, for more information.

I've decided that the next time I go anywhere within the 48 contiguous states, with or without my cat, I'm going to take the train. May take me longer to get where I'm going, but these days I just find flying entirely too aggravating.

there was a $50.00 charge when I flew too, so I had the money as I sat in my seat and waited for them to ask for it.
I think it was obvious something was on my lap, as my cat was in the carrier, but they never asked for it.
so my cat flew for free!

I remember when I went to the restroom, I took her with me, and swaying down the aisle, she would shift like a "dead weight" in the carrier. I was really glad she was "out".

You've got a well-behaved cat.

Since she is getting older, her body may be changing with age. However since she is a hound, I would really watch her when she's outside. Those little hound noses are always looking for something to eat. She may have found grass, dirt, etc. out in the yard that she's been nibbling on. Possibly a cat has been visiting your yard. Or a squirrel burying peanuts. My pooch is a herding dog, so she isn't ruled by her nose. But the little doxie that I babysit, when her daddy is on vacation, spends her first day scoping out my house and yard. I really have to be diligent to make sure she doesn't eat something or do a "head slide" thru something she finds in the yard. She's nine pounds of dog!

yes you can swim w/ the dolphins at Discovery Cove, a division of seaworld. i don't know what it costs for out of state residents but FL residents are discounted to $200 a person on many days of the yr. we were suppossed to do that last nov but had to cancel our date :-( dh had an internship interview. i still very much want to go there, they have alot of other things to do also. i think there are places in south FL and the keyes that also have dolphin swins. if that is out you might think about a kayaking tour in the indian river lagoon by cape canaveral, they are fairly cheap. there are often wild dolphins swimming there and usually manatees too. my dh does A Day Away tours sometimes and has seen both swimming in the warmer months. BTW if alex is still looking at colleges we have the 3rd largest in the country here in orlando, University of Central FL ;-))) my dh is graduating this aug w/ his BS in mechanical engineering w/ 2 semesters left to finish his MS. if you are interested in touring let me know, my dh can take you around. it's about 45 min. northeast of disney. ~ liz Here is a link that might be useful: a day away kayaking

That's so sad. It seems that MoMo's case was complicated by the heart failure, which--if it does similar things to both cats and humans (think swollen ankles)--may have caused more fluids than normal in her body, anyway. At least, so I assume, because the subQ fluids were always rapidly absorbed in the case of my last two cats, who surprised the vet by living 'way beyond what he had expected, thanks to Ubiquinol (a more easily absorbed form of CoQ10) and my giving them gradually more frequent treatments with subQ Ringer's solution. They always absorbed the subQ fluids rather quickly after the fluids had a brief stay in the cat's belly, having run down under the skin and accumulated making something like a little flabby pouch in the loose skin there. Considering the fact that MoMo had heart failure on top of CKD, she probably had little time left with you no matter what treatment she received, and you did everything you could in your power to save her. Please don't blame yourself, but dwell instead on the happy life she had with you. It is natural to have regrets after a loved one dies, and I, too, have wished in the cases of a few other pets that I had tried some other things, but I have decided that we need to give ourselves peace as we remember them. Surely they would not wish any added pain on their beloved owners. It's good that you still have some pets to love.

That is not true In LA. It's very cumbersome to surrender your pet to a shelter and there's a fee as well. Owners are informed that if their pet is not adopted within five days, they will probably be euthanized and must sign an acknowledgment. Therefore, a lot of owners will bring their pet in as a stray to avoid these requirements. If a stray has ID, the owner is notified and has a time limit to claim the animal. If unclaimed, the animal can be adopted or euthanized. It's also difficult to relinquish an unwanted pet to rescue groups as they usually only take animals from high kill shelters that are in immediate danger of being euthanized. We adopted our first dog, Riley from a kill shelter. Her previous owners did not claim her and we found her on the fifth day after their deadline expired. She would have been euthanized the following day so it was very fortunate that the stars aligned for us.

A friend just brought a kitty from NYC that we adopted, and she said that travelling with the cat was relatively painless.
There were some rules about the carrier, and absorbent pads, and when they got to security they had to carry the cat through the security gates and have the carrier scanned. This cat did not have a collar on nor leash or harness and they did not know the cat. They were TERRIFIED it would run. So please be aware that you may need to remove your pet and secure it well. Luckily this cat was so terrified it went limp!
They kept the cat with them on their lap, no problem, but they made sure when they were seated that nobody was allergic to it around them. They were given bulk head seating for extra space with kitty and said they got treated extra well, got off the plane first etc.
Kitty arrived intact if not terrified (you would be too, torn away from pet parents, carried outside into unfamilliar areas, FLYING, and coming to some strangers house...) Luckily she seems just fine here now!

GGG - glad you mentioned a harness. When I took Gracie down (to Georgia!) the first time, I didn't have a harness on her either. She was very nervous going thru the security gates, what with all the noise and people. But I did get a good hold on her and it went OK.

The first thing I did when we got down there was to get her a harness. The return trip went much better.
