JD 110 engine sputters when mowing

I have a JD110 lawn tractor. After mowing for 45 minutes the engine started to sputter/die out. I shut the PTO (power take off) off and the engine start running great. I tried mowing again a minute later and the engine started to die out again so I shut the PTO off and the engine ran great again - so I stopped mowing and put the tractor in the garage. Any ideas on why the engine would react that way when the PTO is turned on? Thanks in advance for your help.

After shut engine down wait just five minutes so as the heat will go higher in sparkplug and coil try start engine if engine cranks and runs good it want be heat related it be gas flow problem. Ther 2 good post at other post on gas problems.

It could be as simple as a little water in the bottom of the fuel bowl on the carb. A bit of extra vibration sends it up where it affects the running. If you do find water/ debris- run the line complete and install a new filter. You also may want to confirm that something even more simple such as a fuel cap that isn't venting isn't starving your fuel supply. Try it with the cap loosened to test. A third possibility would be a safety switch/ connection that is intermittent.

Depends on how steep the ramp is, will the back tires be in the water, and will you have something there to fish the tractor out of tha crick, in case it slides down the ramp, with you on it? As for the machine, did you ask why they are selling it so soon? Get them to start it up, then run it around until the engine is good and warm. check the operation of the transmission, and gears. Is it a Hydrostatic transmission? That might not last long, pulling a boat up a ramp! After it is warmed up, try backing it up a hilly part of their lawn, or yard. Then try the forward position. Nothing worse than buying a used machine, for a pile of cash, then finding out it groans when you put a load on it. I think i'd go talk to a tractor dealer and pick their brain about your idea of the boat ramp. You don't have to buy their product, but you might get some ideas of what to buy. Oh! What does the "groaning" mean? In my experience, it means the tranny is, or will be, failing in the future! (Some here will tell me i'm daffy, so take it for what it's worth!!) Rustyj

The plastic carb is based on the earliest metal version used by Briggs on vertical shaft mower engines back in the 50's. There really is nothing wrong with the design, it works just fine and is less costly to build. That is why it is still used on the cheapest basic flatheads still built by Briggs. The pulsa and vacu-jet carbs were the only carbs used by Briggs for vertical shaft walk mower until the mid 80's when the original Max series engine was introduced. Since the early 90's the Quantum Power is probably the most familiar engine for relative newbie repairmen so they are more familiar with the float bowl carb and have trouble fixing the old carb on tank diaphragm units. They really are simpler and easier to work on once you know them. Even more so on todays version which uses a primer rather then the old auto-choke. If a newbie ran into an auto-choke today they would have a cow.

"If I hold the throttle linkage (governor) at full throttle, the engine will run smoothly. I almost want to just duct tape it in place and call it a day." Valid thought but it will not work out well. Assuming your governor is functioning properly taping it in place would cause the engine to bog down when it hit a load. The RPM's would drop when you engage the blades and drop more when the blades hit the grass with no way for the engine to pull the RPM's back up. From your original post....."The engine runs, but the throttle cycles between high and low throttle. (Governor??) The throttle mechanism is moving on its own." Is this still the case with this engine with no improvement? Does it cycle up and down at an idle as well as at full throttle? I wish I had that carb for about 5 minutes..... Mike

I don't know if the core of what I have been trying to say is clear, or not. But Bill did hit on a different way of saying it. Once a long time ago, there was no such thing as an anti-afterfire fuel solenoid on any brand of outdoor power. Back in those days, everybody's outdoor power engines might pop if you shut them down without a short cool down idle period. Some engines and applications did not pop as much as others, due to different configurations of the exhaust muffler or length of exhaust pipe. Then suddenly, back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the anti-afterfire solenoids began to appear. So, the only way to solve your problem is to have a true professional, well experienced, small engine technician/mechanic evaluate your old tractor and tell you whether or not the tractor ever has an anti-afterfire solenoid on it. If you can remember a time when it did not pop when you shut it down, there may be hope that there is something faulty with an existing solenoid. But if the tractor never was equipped with the anti-afterfire solenoid valve system in the first place, then you are going to have to spend some money to have it retrofitted to behave like a modern tractor. It's kind of like if you want a 1935 Chevrolet with air conditioning on it, you are going to have to pay someone to put it on there because they did not have air conditioned cars back then.

I checked the gas cap and it was a little loose. But, if it runs good with the Power take off off (not mowing) how could it be a gas problem? It only sputters/dies out when I was mowing. thanks again

chuckby: Your JD110 - is this the L110 series? If so, it should be pretty much the same as my old JD Sabre 17.5 lawn tractor. It had a cable activated PTO. IF this is the case, drop the deck and check the blades and spindles. You may have something wrapped around them that is choking out your power. Make sure the blades turn freely - no binding, side motion, etc. The JD L110s are several years old by now, and it may be that your bearings need some attention.

When the engine is under load, it requires more fuel.
If your fuel flow is restricted, the carb slowly runs out.
It could be a partially clogged filter.
