Anyone Grow Black Garnet?

Hi! I was just at Home Depot and they have tons of roses. Lots I have never heard of. They even have Rhapsody in Blue. Anyway, Black Garnet really caught my eye. It was Austin-like, very double and a beautiful dark red. Smelled good too. I looked it up on HMF and Mister Licoln is in it's parentage. ML is one of my very best roses. I have never heard of this one.

What's up with Black Garnet? I'm a sucker for a pretty dark red..........

Me! I grow it. I have had it for afew years. The roses are just stunning with the most unusual double and very full form. It is a nice a deep red without the purple tones that Mr Lincoln has.

Go back and grab it. You will not be sorry. I love this mostly unknown rose.

It's one of my favorites. Lasts long in a vase, full double flowers and wonderful earthy scent.

I didn't realize Mr. Lincoln was a parent.

Not in your climate zone so things might be different. BLACK GARNET is a stunning, stunning rose. It has that full thick form thats so unusual in a TH. Color is a deep black red similiar to Black Magic. It just doesn't bloom that much in my garden but I would never get rid of it. Black Magic would be the perfect HT if it had fragrance. Deep rich black red blooms that last quite well in my garden. My favorite HT. (because it blooms much more than Black Garnet). Black Cherry. I just can't say enough good things about Black Cherry. I have four of them. Deep rich red roses with lovely form. Blooms a lot. One of my favorite top five roses, my second favorite floribunda. Great glossy green leaves that always look fabulous. Black Baccara. Another rich deep black red rose. Maybe not to different looking from Black Magic although Black Magic does better for me (more longer lasting blooms). I will add LAVAGLUT which is the deepest red black rose in my garden. My favorite rose and therefore favorite florobunda (I have about 200). The spring flush on this rose is traffic stopping and the blooms last forever. Seriously, they last about two weeks. Never get icked up by too much rain like normal roses. Alas, no scent.

Anyone growing Viru tea 'Garnet Crest?'

I am growing all 3 new Viru Tea Roses -- Faith Whittlesey, Garnet Crest and Krishna's Peach -- in Jacksonville, Florida. They are all extremely floriferous on compact plants that retain their foliage without any chemical spraying. In three or four years, Faith Whittlesey gets taller than the others -- which is still not too big, about 4 feet tall -- and begins to produce very large white blossoms on longer stems. I've had as many as 50 so far on a plant at one time. Like all Teas, they take a while to get started and then take off. Roses Unlimited handles them exclusively. RU also has a huge selection of Teas about 100 varieties -- see their list in the Sep/Oct American Rose. Vintage Gardens also carries a lot of Teas, but not the new Viru Teas.

A local nursery? Wow. I can't imagine asking one of mine to order it for me. I've just never seen them as being that accommodating. As a bulb or a plant? The ones I've been looking at ordering online are sold as small potted plants. I assumed they didn't get very big in pots. Black Magic never did much in a pot (2 leaves at a time), about a 14" pot, so I figured I would have to plant any colocasias in the ground going forward. If they get nice and full in a pot I will re-think this. How big of a pot did you use? Looking at pictures online, it looked like Blue Eared Gecko is shiny and Black Ruffles is velvety. Was that your experience? How tall would you say each got? And you have Red Eyed Gecko as well? I love lime green: lime green and purple are my accent colors on my patio! I have not seen that one, but will look for it. For the first time last year I planted 2 of the common elephant ear (C. Esculenta) in the ground and one in a pot with other annuals. The 2 in the ground took off and were lush and full. The one in the pot only produced one leaf at a time. All were started in advance in the house to get them woken up and rooting. Which has made me hesitate to order these more exotic ones, as that pretty much makes them an annual if I have to plant them in the ground. I DID dig up my C. Esculentas last fall and store them, which was a lot of work to dig and separate. But most did not make it through the winter in my cool dark basement closet.

I couldn't stop thinking about it. I only saw one, so my daughter and I went back and grabbed it! (Garnet is her birthstone too) It was still there and the other bloom had opened and was amazing. It was a very velvety dark red. I also spotted a Purple Heart. The fragrance wafted over to us and was incredible. That came home with us too. I have all the other Carruth purples so I might as well have this one. They have Weeks tags on them. I watered them and might take their pics and post later. Thanks for the good words about it guys! :o)

Well, 'Black Garnet' is blooming again and it really is just incredible. A very deep red, with red-black shadings that is very full. In bud it is very black-ish. My only complaint is that it
doesn't have a strong fragrance. It seems to be very healthy too. I'm really glad I went back and got it.

The shading comes as the rose ages. At first when it opens its just plain red. The Black Garnet bloom in the backround is newly opened while the other has been here for awhile. Black Garnett is also very thick and full looking.

This is a stunner of a rose that just looks increadable in person. I don't know why its not more well known and grown.

Commenting on this old thread to say that I bought this rose yesterday without knowing anything at all about it---usually not a wise idea---just because the tag said it needs warm nights to succeed. Well, honey, have I got some warm nights for you!!! From July first to October first it will be about 80 degrees nearly every night...gaspingly hot and humid. I was sure glad to find this thread after I brought it home.
