Well, I'm Back--Finally!

Hi, everyone! Getting ready to WS again after a long break. Think the last time I was on the forum was Spring 09.

Anyway... much has happened in the interim. Sold my house in Wilmington, DE and bought a VERY small place in southern DE not far from Lewes. Call it downsizing combined with an interest in the small-house movement!

The place is actually a Rehoboth Beach cottage from the 40's that has been substantially rehabbed. I have a good-sized yard with a a lot of potential, and have been adding some trees and shrubs in the last few weeks. I just moved in two months ago, but didn't want to "miss" the Fall planting season.

So... now looking forward to WS again as I need to start over with perennials. Believe it or not, I literally moved two jugs of hosta babies around me with me the past year and finally got them in the ground a few weeks ago. I was determined to take something from the "old" place with me as I start over.

Some of you may remember "Big Dee" -- my devoted Dobie old lady. Sadly, Dee passed in June a few weeks before my move. Of course, as if there wasn't enough stress.... Now it's just me and Gussy Gus (rambunctious Sheltie teenager).

Very much looking forward to getting back with you wonderful folks here, doing some seed swapping, and exchanging great info.

You have been missed! I haven't been on here in ages, but it sure is nice to check back in and see some folks that had been MIA. Really sorry to hear about Dee... we lost our diabetic cat this summer, so hard to say goodbye to our babies...
You moved south- wowza- we're practically neighbors now! I'm just a bit north of Broadkill Beach, you'll have to come up for a glass of wine or two!

Well, the little birds hatched. There were four of them, not three. I went to check on them earlier and something tore up the nest and the little hatchlings were lying on my porch. They weren't eaten, it just looks like they were knocked out of the nest and fell down. I'm not sure what caused it. I have some cats outside, but they either stay in my backyard, or venture off into the woods. They never go around to the front of my house. Could it have been possums? I see them every now and then on rare occasions, but I always chase them away because I don't like those things. Oh well, the damage is already done. I doubt the parents will come back and rebuild again this year. I plan on buying a birdhouse to hang up on my porch in hopes they choose it as a much safer, out of reach, alternative next time. Needless to say that I'm a little bummed out. :/

Hope you're still feeling good, Faron! DH seems to just not get reactions to vaccines. He has a tiny bit of soreness at the injection site and that is it. He also had no reactions to both shingles vaccines. But holy cow, there was a lightning strike and giant thunderclap very close to where we were in the holding area. It looked a little threatening but we were hoping it would hold off. This was at a HS stadium in a neighboring county, so all the vaccinations were outside in drive through tents. So, I'm assuming they suspended the vaccinations right after that for worker safety, but I think we were close to the end of the day. Then super heavy rain started. So, yeah, we had to drive home about a hour after we picked up some bbq from a famous place, and we stayed off the interstate.

I had so many plans for this winter, but it got cold and then it rained and then I got sick...you know the drill. Now I'm way behind on everything, and even though I know I'll never catch up, it don't really care. I have figs on my Settler's Fig and maybe one on the black fig, but once it starts producing, it goes mad! My elderberry did not get cut back as I planned, and is absolutely gorgeous! Sadly, I will be cutting it back before it starts dropping berries on the sidewalk and all over my courtyard. Gingers are just starting to poke their heads up here in Z9a. I always get excited when the peacock gingers start coming up. They make such a lovely carpet under the elderberry with their cute little lavender flowers. Can't believe I started out a few years ago with only a few of them. I've given away so many over the years. They are truly prolific! My new project is to make a bromeliad bed in front of the apartment against the privacy fence. I didn't bring many broms with me to Gainesville, because I didn't think they would live, but evidently, there are quite a few that do well here. A friend gave me a lot of pups of hers, plus some mama plants that are now putting out babies. I have my beloved Aechmea blanchettiana again! So excited and can't wait until it blooms one day! I bought a tiny baby Ping Tung eggplant yesterday, which I thought was $2.50 and ended up being $3.99. Oh well, at least I got one. Have been wanting one, but didn't want to buy a whole pack of seeds when I only grow one eggplant a year. Well, I'm going to go out and pot up my baby Everglades tomato seedlings I got yesterday from a friend. Mine finally just died and I had not saved any seeds, but of course, I found someone who had some and was willing to share. I don't know what I would do without generous friends. My garden would suffer without them, for sure!

So very glad to see you post again, Prof. What an endeavor....I can't imagine how I would manage it. I have not moved in 24 years...but it was kinda sad to watch our son move around the past years.

I am sorry about your beloved dog.
Yeah, are you on the beach? It's great that you'll have a lot of room for gardening.

Welcome back, Prof. How exciting to have a new home and yard to explore and plant. Been awhile since our last move but I remember the wonder of new places.

Sorry to learn of the loss of your beloved "Big Dee"..an extra hug for "Gussie Gus".

I look forward to your ws posts as well as recipes. Any good soup recipes?

Nice to hear from you again!! I remember the excitement of starting to gardens in new digs and it sounds like you are looking forward to it. That's great!

My heart goes out to you for Big Dee. I'm sure that Gussy Gus will warm up your days and be a good friend in many ways. :O)

Great to see you. Had a conversation about you this week. I haven't been on the forum either, but I check periodically to see if you are around. Sounds like you have new turf for sowing. Very pleased to know you are doing well.
