I Quit Smoking!!

Well this forum hasn't left my heart! Gardening is wonderful and wsing is a great medicine during the winter. So yes I have been gone but I wil always return!!

For whats up lately things are steady. I can't complain about that one bit. I have added and lost a love/hate relationship. Smoking!! Yeah I have really struggled with this major. Well I have been trying to quit for the last 2 years, ugh and failing miserably. Then last year a friend of mine showed me this electronic cigarette, how cool. Well he let me try it and I loved it. Well within a week I purchased this kit and went on my way.

It is almost a year now I have had my slips and for a few months in the spring I actually went back to smoking. Now different longer lasting batteries and some awesome cartos and a few years supply of nic juice I am back on track. I seriously haven't considered giving up my ecig but I have lowered my nic. Best of all I don't smell like an ashtray and this way equals about $0.50 a day. So I save money!! No carcinogens, no tar, no smell!! Whoooo hoooo!!

I know this is totally not a gardening convo. Well blahhhh, I am proud I found a safer alternative, so proud I have to share the news with my gardening buddies.

Congrats Countrycarolyn! Hope it's still going well for you. If so, you put every bit of the money you save in a jar and blow it on yourself next spring when all the new plants are out. You deserve it. : )

How funny! I quit smoking this September as well, but because I fell down a flight of stairs, fractured my calcaneus (heel) bone. Orthopedic surgeon would not operate on a smoker. Now there's an incentive...Quit or never walk normally again!
My foot is elevated, no weight bearing for 2 months..can't put my garden to bed for the winter...I was talking about slowing down..funny ...now I have no choice!

Do you have any charcoal? Not the kind that lights instantly. Regular charcoal or the kind used in aquarium filters. Put some in a butter dish with holes in the lid. Place the dish and the yarn in a garbage bag for a few days with the top closed really tight. Also wash the items after you knit or crochet them. Just incase some of the charcoal might dust off. The charcoal will absorb the odor. I had a gallon of milk leak in the back of my Expedition on the way home from the grocery store. The back is carpeted like the rest of the vehicle. What a stink! Even tho I had cleaned it up and used a cleaner on it. And that was in Feb! I bought some filter charcoal, cause in the winter I didn't have any use for, or place to keep that much for the grill. Then I made a fabric pillow filled with the charcoal granules and put that in the car. After a few days the smell was gone. I did leave the charcoal in all summer. That was 2 years ago. Usually, the car is in the garage, but that summer I spent a month with my daughter and had to park outside in the sun the whole time. Even then, it didn't smell like sour milk. If it gets rid of sour milk smell, it'll take out cigarette smoke! Tami

Taking thyroid meds won't make you lose weight, they just make your thyroid work like a normal person's thyroid. You have to lose the weight yourself. Generally, before being diagnosed, you become sluggish and achy and somewhat depressed, These conditions are what cause you to gain weight. Now you have to force yourself to move and cut calories. It's a pain but the only way. Lydia I feel very bad for you. Any disease can be a challenge. All the effects you mentioned are part of the disease if not treated. If you're still having them then you need to tell your dr. Are you seeing a endocrinologist? Do you take a good daily vitamin? When I felt like you described my dr. ran some bloods to find out that I was dangerously deficient in vitamin D. She ran them because my symptoms (and yours) describe that deficiency to a T. She prescribed 50,000 units of D once a week for six weeks and then once a month for four months. I became a new person. All of my energy is back, the cloud lifted and I'm joyful again. When I quit I learned one thing: You will NOT quit until YOU WANT to quit. That's the number one thing. What works for one won't work for another. Money was a big motivator for me. At the time I decided to quit I knew I was going to be quitting my job soon and the discounts I got on cigarettes would end. And at one point I was around 5 packs a day and just went, nope, won't be paying that much. I liked the taste of a cigarette (and do to this day) but it simply was not worth it. Smoking is more habit than anything else. Break your routine. I quit smoking at home first, then quit at work, then quit in the vehicle. That was the toughest part. Get in and reach for a smoke. But when I did a simple adjustment like moving the cigarettes to a different pocket and started noticing my hand in an empty pocket, I realized just how much it's habit. Working in the garage really gave an urge. But when I realized it was the habit it became much easier to deal with. Like with a diet or many other things, what works for one isn't for everyone. You need to find your motivator and use it to your advantage. Once I truly decided I WANTED to quit, the quitting part wasn't very difficult. The tough part is convincing oneself that you want to quit. Good luck finding what works for you. Once you do, you're almost home.

Congratulations to all of you who have quit ... and I hope that it inspires some of you who've been considering it to jump on the bandwagon: support one another! As some have suggested, they've found that altering one's routines that involved smoking was important. Some of you may find that chewing on a piece of celery, carrot, etc. helps ... or even a toothpick: if your mouth is sad at the lack of attention - give it something to occupy it. I recommend also that you save the cost of the smokes, at first in a jar at home, then in a special bank account, and, eventually, investment account. It'll mount up surprisingly fast ... and high! Hey! It may help you to retire early ... and have better health to enjoy the quite likely added years. ole joyfuelled ... who, a thankful non-smoker, hasn't smoked in 70 years

It is a hard, hard row to hoe, quitting that habit.

I never smoked, but I did help my Dad stop smoking when I was a little girl. I'd heard about how bad smoking was in school, and when my Dad picked up the pack of cigarettes, I'd climb up into his lap, look up into his face, and ask him "Daddy, why do you want to kill yourself?". He told me much later that he quit because he could never find an answer to that question.

Wendy I hope you recover quickly!

Someone had mentioned that smoking prevents our bodies from healing as fast. Not sure if it is true though! I know it has been a hard struggle to give it up but I feel so much better now. I won't say I am totally over all of the cravings but it is getting easier!!

Wendy, I am proud you quit, it's hard but it gets easier. If you slip don't kick yourself. Believe me I have had a ton of slips since I have been working on quiting. Today is 4 weeks since my last slip. With my slips I still have managed to not smoke over 2500 cigarettes since mid june. That number is crazy! Though it helps to focus on what I didn't smoke!!

CC,do you really like the e cig? There are several ones on the market,which one do you have? I don't smoke, but my hubby does, he has been talking about the e cig.They coast about $ 100.00, for the first time, is that correct?Thanks for any information you can share, and congratulations on your quitting, it is not easy.

Just1morehosta, I am so sorry I am just now seeing this. I tell you what my life has been flip flopped flung!!

If your husband is still interested let me know. I can find him some links for a kit to get him started under 40 bucks. Heck I smoked about a pack to two packs a day and here in tn a pack cost about 5 bucks. So a kit actually saved me a ton of money. Think of it as 1 carton.

Love the ecig by the way. LOVE it!! Still haven't had a smoke and I am going strong!!
