I believe it's a Jim Coiner rose from Coiner's Nursery in LaVerne, Ca. He supplies many roses to Home Depot, Lowe's, Costco, etc. Kim

Hi Kim, actually, I discovered that when I went to his website. That is so awesome! I bought a couple of those this year at Home Depot. I hadn't ever heard of it before (haven't been growing roses for the last 12 years or so, I had over 50 rose bushes for several years back then.)but I could tell the foliage was good, and the blooms were impressive. Planted them in March and they have been wonderful. Didn't burn up in our 100 degree days like most of my other roses. I can tell they will be among my favorites. I love the way they open slowly and they have such beautiful form. Just started a new yard here and I'm trying not to get carried away. Only have 13 right now and I'm holding myself back, at least I'm trying to! You sound so knowledgeable. What is your background in the business (if I may ask?)

Hi Dustyrose, congratulations on the new garden! Very difficult holding back and reserving room for future "must haves", isn't it? Thanks for your kind words. I've been a "rose nut" for over thirty years and have read everything I could get my hands on. Long before Help Me Find, I researched roses and their lineages in the Modern Roses editions by the American Rose Society. I always knew I wanted to breed roses of my own, and also figured the only way I could know whether any of my 'creations' were noteworthy would be to observe and handle as many roses as I possibly could. How can you know where it is possible to go, without knowing where you have been?

I was fortunate to be a volunteer at The Huntington Library in the eighties and nineties, "specializing" in propagation. I've worked in the nursery business for a number of years, both wholesale and retail and had the "pleasure" of actually working the rose harvest in Wasco with the old Ashdown Roses one year. It was colder than a personnel manager's heart! (no offense to any personnel managers reading this!) I've haunted public and private rose collections as often as I could since the early 1980s and studied every variety I encountered, taking thousands of slides "back in the day" prior to digital photography, to document as many as I could so I'd remember their particulars.

My last, large garden had something over fifteen-hundred varieties pass through it in its 18 year existence. If you're interested in seeing what grew there, I've included the link to the list on Help Me Find-Roses below. Several of my rose articles are also on Help Me Find, as are my named (and a few unnamed) roses, and my current rose garden listing. I've imported several times from Britain; traded cuttings all around the country and Canada; sent bud wood to Europe on several occasions and seed to Australia a few times.

I've spoken to a number of rose societies over the years and at one of the old Huntington Symposium on Old Roses. My articles have been printed and reprinted in newsletters across this country and a few times in Europe. I've had the pleasure, and honor, of knowing some very knowledgeable, wonderful rose people and the great honor of having Ralph Moore, the rose breeder who lived in Visalia, California, who bred roses for nearly 80 years, as a good friend for nearly 25 years. I traveled to play in the roses with him as often as possible and learned a great many things from those visits. He introduced my first commercial seedling, Purple Buttons. I'm active in The Rose Hybridizers Association and learn of many new, fun and exciting things there. I trade seedling varieties with a number of other "amateur hybridizers" who also go in for the "esoteric".

I've gardened in the mid desert here in Southern California and worked with roses virtually on the water on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. I currently garden midway between the two with more humidity, more fog, a bit less heat and cold and much more disease than the desert, but many fewer issues than on the coast. That's given me a unique perspective of how greatly they can vary in appearance and performance from one climate to the next. I guess I've always been programmed as a 'diagnostician" as it has come very naturally to me. There is always a logical reason Natural things happen, whether we can see them or not.

I've actively tried to preserve and reintroduce as many obscure and rare roses as I possibly could for the past nearly thirty years, funneling the old, odd, rare and obscure varieties through any nursery which would take them on. Many have gone to Vintage, Ashdown, Pixie Treasures, The Rose Ranch, Sequoia and several others. A number of my roses are now commercially available in The Netherlands from Bierkreek and are finding their way across Europe. That's a fun thing to watch!

Currently, I make every effort to limit the roses to fewer than three hundred, not including my own, unnamed seedlings. I think by now, I've pretty much done everything possible with roses except exhibiting. That's just too much "work" for me. Kim

DustyRose, I saw J.C.'s rose at HD and was tempted to get it but try to research roses before I buy. I wasn't surprised that I couldn't find info as I saw a few other roses with initials only. It's a beautiful color--let us know how it works out for you.

When you saw the roses with just initials, we're they all just J.C.'s or were there different initials on different colors of bushes? The only J.C. 's I saw were that deep magenta/purple color. I wasn't able to see a full bloom...just a couple of buds. Should be in bloom tomorrow so I will know a little more by then. Definitely a grandiflora though.

DustyRose, after posting I remembered seeing a couple with a first name instead of initials. J.C.'s rose was the only one with initials and I saw it in bloom (a beautiful magenta color). Coiner is notorious for these labels--I've seen them marked just "red rose", "yellow rose" and so far I've seen only Coiner roses at HD unlike Lowe's which has roses from V&P Nurseries (Gilbert, AZ), Nakase (Laveen, AZ), Altman's from CA. In fact the major nurseries in Phoenix (Berridge and Baker) didn't carry any J&P roses this year. I was disappointed as I wanted OLOG, Ingrid Bergman, and Veteran's Honor. Lowe's had all three.
Anyway, let me know about J.C.'s (how it stands up to heat, does it shatter quickly, etc.)

That's how they were at Home Depot in Santa Clarita yesterday. Many one gallon "minis" with generic "mini rose" tags, including the flat full of cull budded Iceberg in gallons for the same $6.88 as the minis, including the "mini rose" tags. I didn't even look at the 1.5 gallon bud and bloom roses for the same $5.88 as the same size geraniums and other "perennials". I needed hardware to repair a door latch but walked in through the "garden department" just to see. Kim

I emailed James Coiner to see if that was his rose and if he could tell me any more about it. (I also complimented him on developing the "Pink Promise" rose which is wonderful!)
He was kind enough to reply today:
"Ann thank you for purchasing our roses. I hope they bring years of beauty to your yard. Yes JC's Rose is a new introduction and was just released this past year. I am sorry we don't have more information for you about the rose. We are in the process or redesigning our web site. When our site is up it will have photos and more information about the rose. Pink Promise Rose has given over $30K to Breast Cancer early detection and research for a cure."

At times the guys at home depot have asked if I want an apron since I spend so much time there for the day job...so of course I had to park by the garden dept today. (and yes there is a $6 2g Sexy Rexy in the back of the truck-I have a section in the yard I was planting annuals or daylilies because I have dreams of a future project-guess I will have a Sexy Rexy in those holes for now)

Today as I was waiting on my maint guy to pick up my work purchases, I happened to wait by the 2g $7.98 roses....

After he loaded my work purchases, I loaded a few roses. One being....J. C.'s Rose, the others a Perfume Delight and Blue Girl.

How did your JC Rose turn out so far DustyRoseAZ?

oh my god! I, as well, was at Home Depot and also purchased a JC's rose. The perfume like fragrance was amazing. You just dont smell roses so pretty any more. But obviously what caught my attention was the big purple magenta like flowers, Another lady and I were fighting over it. This WILL BE an award winner! One of the best new roses I have seen in a long time.

I need to bring the camera. But I can see why the breeder would want his name on this rose.

The sprays are big enough to fill a vase and hold on the bush for what seems like forever. So far mine is a mannerly size and had had a spray or two for the past month.
