Based on the Roses in Review reports from hundreds of growers around the country, it appears Double Knock Out does not get as large as the original Knock Out and is not quite as vigorous, but still is a nice rose. Rainbow Knock Out is clearly less vigorous than the original, not getting as big and not blooming nearly as much. Pink Knock Out is just about as vigorous as the original and might be a nice complement to it. Another rose to consider is Home Run. Lots of bright red blooms with yellow stamens on a disease-resistant plant. The blooms don't last as long as those of Knock Out, but it almost always has some blooms.

short answer ... yes .... go to the hosta library .... above the first pic of a plant.. is myhosta.net link.. hit it.. usually you can find the heritage of a plant... mom and dad ... and trace back thru the generations... and you will find that there are something like 20 species.. and they all come up at differing times ... so.. its all in the genes ... some extremely early .. some late.. most in the middle.. and a few weirdos like montana [discussed above] that come up.. go figure on this.. early and late... which never seemed right to me... something wrong with that logic ... or .. in the alternative... just accept the simple answer .. Thank you! Gardenprince, it’s interesting that your James Compton is in full sun and doesn’t flower, whereas mine is in full to dappled shade and doesn’t flower. I may move the one that is in the woodland garden. The leaves are pretty but since it never achieves any height, I can’t see it there. I’ll plug one of the new species racemosa into its spot. Peren.all, NHBabs, what kind of spread does your species racemosa have? I’m staking out locations. They are coming bare root next week. I’ll have to see how Black Negligee does this year. It was a costly impulse purchase at a local nursery with high prices. It was a large specimen, though. Of course now I want it to justify my faith. The flowers did not smell bad, though: quite the opposite. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for Brunette or Hillside Black Beauty.
