How do you plant a rose?

My roses came yesterday, and my husband had his own idea of how to plant them, and if he is wrong I need the change it. They came planted in soil. I felt that the soil around the roses should be even with the soil on the ground. His idea was to plant it two inches deeper and make a well, but i think the well would one day get covered up, and then the roses will be two inches deeper than what was in the pot. hope i make sense. Help?

Actually, I rather like his idea.

The thing is, in our experience, roses always sink down anyhow. Well, no, PROBABLY the soil rises, as old mulch decays and becomes soil, and new mulch is added.
Bud unions meticulously planted above ground (now, I would bury them anyhow) end up below ground level, as the soil level rises.

In your husband's scenario, they do start out with a "bowl" that will localize water.

BUT another way to do that would be to use extra soil, removed from your hole, to build a dike around the rose, creating a ground-level "bowl."

I used to go through all kinds of contortions when I planted a rose...or anything else for that matter. All sorts of expensive composts and additives got mixed in the planting hole. Sometimes they did great and sometimes they didn't. Then I read a report put out by the University of Florida that said that plants adjust best when just planted in the native soil. I've been planting new roses and camellias and I quit ammending the planting hole. I work the soil up nicely, water them well, and lovingly plant them. I add the compost, etc. on top of the soil, as nature would. I've noticed over the years that earth worms are more than willing to bring the good stuff down to where the roots are. I'm having great results with a LOT less work. They seem to be adjusting to their new home much quicker. And it's less expensive, too. I've also switched to pine needles as mulch rather than pine bark, and have much less of a weed issue in my beds. Fortunately, bales of pine needles are harvested in my area, so the price is reasonable. Sandy

How do you plant a rose to climb up a tree?

Tree roots give roses a lot of competition for nutriants and water so it is best to plant the rose three feet away from the base of the tree. Slope the rose in the planting hole on an angle towards the tree trunk, then tie it onto a stake that is attatched to the tree. When it has grown up the stake and can be tied to the tree then remove the stake.

I think that looks cute but I wouldn't leave it on all night. Every living thing needs some time to rest. Humans do most of of their growth and repair during sleep. Did you know the most weight loss happens during sleep as well? You can get the most out of it by not eating 3 hours before sleep, eating plenty of fiber at dinnertime and getting a full 8+ hours of sleep. You get a bigger release of human growth hormone around midnight as well. Sleep is good for everyone. My neighbor had an ivy on a windowsill and left the light on over it all night for security reasons. I always wondered if it was stunting its growth. Humans sleep better in a dark room according to sleep studies. Plants are very sensitive to light so maybe they need darkness even more than we do. You can see how it goes. Light will surely attract insects.

How deep do you plant a rose tree?

Since pots have finite space, the issue with deep planting in a pot is that you've wasted a fair amount of pot space. The more usual thing is to plant them at a normal depth, and use a stake for stability. You will probably find out they need staking anyway.

You could plant the rose five inches lower than the soil level in the pot and the rose would be fine. Unless it was just a real little baby. Two inches should be fine. I plant my roses an inch lower than what they were in the pot. Too much mulch in the planting hole does not show up for a few years. As the mulch breaks down the rose will gradually sink, the soil level around the base is the same. The entire bush is sinking with the soil it was planted in.
