Elskunkito, tomatoes generally don't like temps below 50 degrees at night or day temps above 95 degrees. I know they won't set fruit unless they are in that temperature window. I'm in zone 5. In a good year, I've picked tomatoes until mid-October. This year was not a good year. My plants got early blight & I couldn't get it under control with all the rain we had in July. I had my plants ripped out by Labor Day.

First of all, regardless of who uses it, I can't help but recommend that you max out the ram in your desktop if it hasn't been done already. It's great "bang for the buck". You can probably get a $500 laptop that will do the trick, but I might suggest a trip to best buy or one of the other dealers and talk to them about it. I noticed that hggregg has some great prices, but their sales folks don't seem to know their stuff so "caveat emptor". Buy one with a dual core processor and at least 3 or 4 meg RAM and you should be fine. (I'd worry less about the hard drive capacity.) Also, based on my latest experience with HP laptops, I would avoid them. I bought one for my niece a bit over a year ago and the mousepad buttons have come off in addition to it failing to go into sleep mode when the clamshell is shut. They look great but don't hold up worth a darned under normal teen use.

I don't think you ever throw in the towel, this isn't an all or nothing situation, but I think it might be time to back off, as others have said. Of course she thinks she knows everything and you know nothing, she's 22 years old! Let her lead her own life, she's an adult and needs to make decisions, good and bad, and live with the consequences. You told her to take responsibility for her own life, now let her. She doesn't know her own mind well enough yet (she has child's mind in an adult body) and can easily take offense at something that those of us older and wiser would ignore. No one likes to be nagged or reminded about bad decisions. She should grow and mature over the next few years. Granted, her grandmother is an enabler in this situation, but there's nothing you can do about that, so let it be. Of course you'll want to send gifts to the grandchildren and a birthday card for your daughter every year (so you can honestly say you didn't throw in the towel). And you'll be there when she starts to make tentative steps to restore a relationship, and you won't bring up the past, at all, you'll just look to the future. If there's a crisis, she may well contact you, since most of us look for mom for help and support, and again, you step in with appropriate help, and then step away. You'll have to be careful not to over-react to any advances by her, in a positive or negative way, don't try to step in and take over, don't remind her of her past behavior or how hurt you've been by her behavior, just let each encounter with her be a new beginning. Her first attempts to reach out to you may be through the grandchildren, enjoy them, but again, don't over react. Take it slowly and carefully. Good luck.

I grow Nicotiana, flowering tobacco, of many varieties all over the place here and have never seen galls on any. (By the way, if you teach plant biology and want a surefire, fast-acting pollen for pollen-germination exercises, Nicotiana never fails.) The bacteria is around, however, and I have had maybe three roses infected over 13 years here, two of which I discarded. The big (and I mean "big" in every sense of the word) is my 'Mrs. B.R. Cant', which started showing symptoms of crown gall (or something very like it!) about 8 years ago or so -- a big, crusty swelling at the base and then various "tumors" along the canes. My heart sank. I kept meaning to take her out, but delayed and delayed because she occupies a large amount of real estate (being 8' tall and more than 14' wide now) in a prominent position on a hillside, which I would then have to re-do (sigh), plus I absolutely love her. And, anyway, she has never seemed to suffer any decline in growth, bloom, or overall appearance during all this time (which I keep waiting for, but it hasn't happened yet), so there she stays, the exception to the "rule".
