Kawasaki fb460v no spark??

I just bought a 52" toro walk behind mower and it will not start. if i hold the wire and ground the tip of the plug it will spark but it is very weak. Is the coil bad?

Most of your new style spark plugs are resistor type and have a very fine spark. When you say weak is it yellow or white arcs? If it is a skinney blue/orange spark it is fine you have other problems. Also is it firing across the end or across to the side where the threads are? If it is not arcing across the electrode then its probably fouled out, esp if its a NGK plug. I am thinking it is a NGK plug BPR5ES, this is a resistor plug, hince the R in the number, non resistor would be BP5ES and would have a fat blue/orange spark at the electrode.

Also we need the type of the engine to help you out. This engine could have a 1 piece ignition ie coil only or 2 piece, ie coil and ignitor setup.

The type is what will help us determine which system you have.

"If I understand you right, the coil is weak and I need a new one. As a sidenote, what is the ignitor, the little square chip thing next to the dipstick?" Ok, you have a trigger on this setup and it tells the coil when to fire. The trigger or the coil could be causing this problem and I would lean toward the coil. Without a scope there is no real way to know which is the culprit and even then its tricky because you have to catch the parts hot and failing. You have the dilemma of which part to try in that most electrical parts are not returnable. IF you are ready to take a shot at it try the coil first. I guess I would see what I have coming out of those 2 wires. If you have AC, then you will need to install a regulator. I assume the old engine had DC out into the system and the mower has no external regulator? I didn't research it, but here is a link that should help. Let us know if you need more help. Good luck. Before searching for any kill wire circuitry, don't bother looking. This ignition system is a true "battery and coil" ignition system. It does not feature the type of kill wire grounding facility necessary to defeat spark for stopping the engine as magneto based ignition systems have. In this Kaw ignition system, the "pulsar coils" are only "pick up coils" and do nothing but sense the position of the crankshaft by means of the reluctor mass passing near the pulsar. In fact, it would be entirely appropriate to call the pulsar a Crankshaft Position Sensor. The passing mass of the reluctor section affects the low level electromagnetism of the pulsar and in this manner provides a firing signal to the ignition module (aka igniter). The igniter is the component that controls when current is provided to each respective ignition coil to saturate the coil, and the igniter breaks the circuit feeding each coil at the proper moment so that a spark will be delivered to the spark plug. All the testing you have done is pointing to a defective igniter.

Too many new batteries are sick right out of the box. Always best to buy your wet cell batteries at a place where they will load test the old one to make sure it is bad and the NEW one before you take it home. Triple check the battery cable connection ESPECIALLY the ground cable to engine and/or frame. A poor B+ or ground connection will lose a lot of current and can eat a new battery or kill a perfectly good starter. Also, make sure the correct winter viscosity oil is in that Kwacker Twin. If it is really cold there, thick oil can slow the spin way down.

the plug that came in the motor when i bought it is a BM4A and the new one is a BMPR4A.

Yes, my bad...

I don't know why I typed BPR5ES, that is for the overhead valve engines. duh...

The R in the BMPR4A is for resistor and will have a fine arc across the electrode. BM4A is non resistored.

By the picture you have a 2 piece ign, the coil and the little box on the end of the wire is a ignitor, whick performs the same function as a set of points and condensor.

This version is harder to test, you need a spare "good" ignitor to try first, they are not cheap to buy new just to try. I kept one in my box to loan out for this occasion. Ignitors fail most of the time, but sometimes its the coil. I am not aware of a way to test the ignitor with a volt/ohm meter.

You want to seek out some help for a shop that works on the Kawi for proper diagnose of the problem.

The FB460 is a single stage coil module ignition, 12.5HP. Advance carries the non-resistor NGK's, I use them in my two Pentons since they both have Motoplat ignitions.

Engine will run just fine on either resistor or non resistor plug. Champion CJ14 works also.

If you go to Kawasaki's or JD's site's you will find a coil and ignitor ignition system listed.

JD used the split systems on RX/SX95's, 160's and 112L's to name a few.

It's most likely the ignitor (small silver square box on the side of the engine).

On the coil there is a metal tab that grounds itself to its mounting bracket. on my coil the tab was broken off or rusted away so i soldiered a wire to the little nub and grounded it to the bolt and i now have spark! thanks for the help
