Need assistance with Huskee Gt Mower (26 hp Briggs & Stratton)

My mower (Huskee GT with 26 hp Briggs and Stratton ELS OHV engine) will not run. About a month ago, after running for an hour or so, the mower would start to choke out (like running out of gas). I have changed the fuel supply, fuel filter, spark plugs, and I have removed the carburator and cleaned with carburator cleaner. Now, it will only start on low throttle (open choke), and will only run for about a minute. Any body have any clues as to what Ishould do next? Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide.

kinda sounds like the carb is clogged up no ? Perhaps it needs cleaning - or has water in it. (Dry gas would take care of a water problem).

Do you have a fuel filter on the machine ... If youve recently replace it - make sure the arrow on the filter is pointing in the correct direction .

Did you use the proper fuel filter?
IF the engine is gravity feed AND you used a filter for an engine equipped with a fuel fumb, you could easily have fuel delivery issues,

Also, loosen the gas cap to make sure a clogged vent isn't creating a vacuum in the gas tank. Unlikely, since that problem "tends" to occur after a longer run time, but it's free to check.

I discovered that the problem was the safety switch for the mower deck. It has come out of its mounting position, but I can't figure out where that is so I can put it back. The switch is located on the left side (when facing the front of the mower) below the gas tank. There is a small (3/4") square hole in the sheet metal where it appears that the button on the switch could portrude thru, and that possibly there was a mounting bracket that held it in place (this is the case with the safety switch under the seat). However, there doesn't appear to be anything beneath that hole that would make contact with the button when the mower deck lever is raised and lowered. Any suggestions on the proper location of this switch? I have taped the button down as a short term fix so I can use the mower. Also, although unrelated to the starting problem, the brake pedal is definitely having trouble stopping the mower. What's the most likely cause and fix for this? Thanks!

rcmoser.... Yes, changing oil frequently is good. I actually change the oil every 25 hours of engine time. Every 50 hours, I change the oil filter too. That makes 6 oil changes per year.... We don't often get feedback as to how effective frequent oil changes are in preserving our engines. I recently had to disassemble my 26 hp Briggs Intek V-twin to replace a leaking sump gasket. The engine has been mine since new, with the above oil change schedule. Currently the hour meter reads 751 hours. Below, I will post two pictures of what my 'lower end' looked like when I cracked it open, for the first time, last month (before any cleanup). In the pictures you can see the sump gasket pieces scattered all over the sump and block. Other than the gasket pieces the 'lower end' is perfectly clean. Not a sign of any gunk or sludge could be found. Now I know why Briggs designed the engine with that oil screen in the bottom of the sump. The purpose of the screen is to prevent pieces of their cheap and poorly applied sump gasket from reaching the oil pump!

This is all great and dandy but how can we apply this info? How can you compare older mowers (before 2008) to the newer ones (2008 onward) to make a decision on what to buy? I have decided to summarize the pertinent information in a very concise way so any consumer can have a starting point for comparison in a SIMPLE way. First, if you have an "older mower" you need to know its effective HP based on its operating RPM. Example: Want to know the actual HP of your older mower? Older mower is 6 HP. Multiply by 0.85 = 5.1 HP ("Real" HP) 0.85 = 3060/3600 (to convert from tested RPM to actual RPM) Too hard to calculate in your head on the spot? Try multiplying by 0.8, then add 0.3 to your answer. This is a close approximation. Want to know the torque of your older mower? First, make sure you know the "real" HP of your motor (as above). Then use the "real" HP as follows: Older mower is 5.1 HP. Divide by 0.6 (or multiply by 10 and divide by 6) = 8.5 ft-lb. Want to know the HP of a newer mower? Newer mower is 7 ft-lb torque. Multiply by 0.6 = 4.2 HP Remember, this is only to give you simple way to do a comparison but it is based on a few assumptions. (They are not important, just to keep it simple.) Don't bother trying to compare size or displacement of a motor shown in cc's for the simple reason that even B & S has the same 190 cc motor that is sold as a 6.75 ft-lb torque model all the way to an 8.5 ft-lb torque model. "using catch can, test for fuel flow to carb inlet by cranking engine. Be careful of fire." I would point out this will do no good as the engine has a fuel pump built into the carb. As mentioned way back up on this very old thread, check the vacuum impulse line from the engine block to the fuel pump. This will be the bottom line, gas line is on the side IF you took the fuel pump apart, did you find and properly replace the 2 tiny springs? Also make certain that the "pulse hose" that connects the fuel pump to the engine crankcase is not cracked or split. Cracks or splits in this hose will result in "diminished fuel pump output". The fact that it occurred after an hour of use the first time would have been consistent with a clogged cap vent. That you now have an issue immediately after starting points more to other things. All the same, check the cap vent. Also, clarify if this problem occurs at all engine RPM and with load or without load (cutting grass is load).

I found a series of problems. The fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb was indeed cracked. I also throughly cleaned the carb with carb cleaner and compressed air (found it a little trashy also). It's back running now, and I thank all of you!

Have a craftsman 19.5 riding mower. Mower will run great for about 10 minutes and suddenly cut off. Can't get restarted, and spend considerable amount of time trying to get started. Have done the followoing..
1. drained tank of old gas.
2. Replaced filter with new proper filter
3. changed oil
4. Changed filter
Great flow from tank to filter. Will start and run for about 10 minutes and cut off. Have also replaced line from carb. to engine. Old line looked okay but replaces as the old line came off very easily and may be getting air when heating up. any suggestions.....

Please, start a new thread for this machine. And post some critical numbers (engine make and model number from the engine, engine type number, or at least the Craftsman 917.xxxxxx number.
