Color Flash astilbe--your experience? sources?
Comments (2)It's a GREAT astilbe!!!! Forget about flowers, they are not very special or particularly showy, but foliage is to die for, especialy in a somewhat sunnier location. And it change colors in a fall, too! However, I must mention something strange in its behaviour in my garden. I don't know if this is a feature of this particular cultivar or just coincidence/fluke, but... I planted 3 clumps of it in 2005. Next spring 2 were nice and bushy, but one clump was looking somewhat depressed and never become a former self. I added another 3 plants in 2006 to the immediate area. In 2007 5 plants grew to my enjoyment and occupied about 15-18sf area, but one (2006'-loser) never sprouted. Also, I noticed some seedlings between plants, but there were just a few of them and I didn't pay much attention to that. In 2008 only 1(!) out of 5 clumps sprouted while other 4 produced just a few puny leaves and upon digging revealed a mass of dead rotted roots. However, all area where they were in 2007 now is literaly covered with fresh seedlings which looks like a happy campers and are true to the parent. I don't want to make any statements yet about general lifespan of this plant, but so far [in my garden] it behaved as a short-lived, but a self-seeded perennial....See MoreRose color change as temperature changes
Comments (13)Thanks guys. You sure know how to make this new guy feel great. I just have to make sure my ego doesn't inflate too big with all your kind words. Very interesting observation Seil. It is good to know that the reverse could happen as well. You know what Meredith, I wish I had the kind of resilience that you have when planning garden colours. I guess I never really went for the "designer" look. I am sort of the cottage garden kinda guy. I want as many colours as possible. I admit that predominantly most of my roses are pink, yellow, apricot and red. I am trying to get as much as different colours as possible. I find it hard to stick with a limited pallet....See MoreNo color on astilbe
Comments (12)Hi Pauline, What color were your astilbe supposed to be....a lot of the colors seem to be kind of fadey and paleish (those are too words) If you bought something that was supposed to be bright, maybe it was mislabeled. Im just throwing in my two cents worth because I can't think of too many things sadder than a person agonizing over how to make a pale pink astilbe into a bright pink one if it never wert. (is too a word) And can we please stop talking about spray painting flowers now.....I think Im allergic to artifice (is too a word)...See MoreColor on Astilbe: Reinland and Visions
Comments (5)Mine as well do not have the color to the blooms nor a convincing robustness to the foliage this year- I do believe most of my astilbe have done their best performance when the weather has been much cooler and more moist. Although- the Goat's Beard Aruncus sent out the most lovely plumes this spring much to my surprise- They have always bloomed in the fall before- I do hope to get a repeat bloom this fall- but if things don't cool off and moisten up soon- I can see where many plants will be shutting down early this year-...See Moretriciae
