Need sprinkler head info. concerning narrow bed

I just recently purchased a small condo. Next week I am having almost all of the tiny backyard paved with patio pavers. There will be a 30 foot by 15 inch area (which butts up to the neighbor's house) to use for flowers and small bushes. Originally, there was an automatic sprinking system in the back. I would like to come off the two pre-existing values and install an automatic system in the bed. However ...

I want to be careful not to spray water on my neighbor's stucco, and I don't want to water my patio. Can anyone suggest what type of sprinkler heads I should use, and how far apart I should install them.

I hate those small quarter-inch black hoses, as they always seem to pop off. Still, I am open to any suggestions.

Drip or Micro Irrigation.

I think Drip Irrigation would be the easiest to install and most efficient for your area. There will be no spray on your patio or neighbors house. Simply run the main water supply line down the length of the planting bed along the house or patio. Then attach the individual dripline pipes with drip emitters. Cover with mulch and your done.

Thank you for your quick response. I took a look at the example.
Is the item marked "lateral" a piece of PVC pipe? If so, I am assuming it is buried underground. I hope this is true, as I will be running PVC from existing values, under the new patio pavers, out to the long narrow garden area.

How big is the hose on which the emitters are attached? Again, if the lateral pipe is underground, then this hose must start at the underground position and come up above ground, to be placed around the trees and bushes. Right?

I had the same problem and It was so challenging. It always looked unfinished and I felt like people would fall off of the edge of the deck. Plus our dog insisted it was a dog run which was kind of gross. We found a work around. We bought a fence screen from an online store that offers next day delivery (website to remain unnamed. :-) They come in different lengths, height and colours. (Forgive the mess. We were prepping the spot in front of the equipment to extend the concrete pad and address the gap) The fence screen we are fast an easy install and this fabric doesn't fade or rip. It allows air to flow through but keeps dirt from going through the fence. After I dug a trent for the trees, I ran the landscape fabric over stones that we placed along the bottom of the fenceto create a basin. then back filled with soil. To break up the green we had cedar privacy screens, strategically placed to be over drainage, and grounding wires for the pool. I plan to plant hydrangea bushes at the base of the cedar screens but my husband wants hicks yews (no maintenance required and all around greenery for those of use who have cold weather 8 months our of the year).

BTW I was looking for gardening advice and it appears my personal garden web has switched over to my pro page. I am responding as an amateur urban gardener only. Hope our personal experience can encourage you. I lived on the clay of the Canadian prairies and has a SSW facing side yard that could not grow grass (too hot in summer with reflection off stucco home) so I planted thyme and let it go. The bees came and set up lots of hives underground, so you know it was dry. Best friends a girl gardener could ever have. No gophers, no snakes, no pests. The Burr oak trees thrived. The foundation was just fine. The entire house was on a manual operation system but I had valves installed inside the house. Likely if you have clay without any ancient rock coming up you will be just fine. Go for it. Shut off the water between houses and see what happens. Just mark where you close off lines in case you need to restore the original system. When our house was newer we had some soil settling from the infill for excavation, but that was easily remedied by adding more and resloping. If you have heavy clay you could slope your side to create a simple gutter to drain front and back at the edge of your property line. Ensure your soil slopes away from the houses. You may want to add gravel for a walk way, which ants and trespassers do not like as much as paving blocks. If you are in a suburb with close neighbors you could work on a mutual beneficial no water zone with drainage to front and back. Hope this encourages you. In our new location we have arid steppe again but the soil is sandy and rocky as we sit on an ancient river system. I have done all the line and layout (the fun dirty digging work) but hired a professional to work at the irrigation diverter. I do a lot of math as a K&B designer and felt hiring a pro irrigation brain to calibrate and assemble the additional pressure controls was money well spent.

My oldest wet his bed almost nightly until about 6 months ago. He's 13 1/2. I'd wake him up and literally walk him to the bathroom, where he'd stand there and sway back and forth, go walk into his closet, pee in there, then head back to bed. Sometimes he'd use the trash can. He'd have no memory of it in the morning. He was such a heavy, heavy sleeper. Sometimes it was best just to leave him in bed, at least I knew where he had the accident. We all laugh about it now, but he had the same problems, couldn't have sleep outs or sleepovers. Even now if he's going to sleep out, he won't drink anything after 7:00. He's still a very heavy sleeper. I had the same problem as a kid, so did his dad. And we were both heavy sleepers as kids. My son, also, unfortunately inherited my bladder size, so that doesn't help. The pediatrcian just advised that we wait it out and didn't give medication. I worry so much about my kids taking medications, and since this wasn't anything physically painful, we decided to wait it out. It took awhile, but things are fine. My younger two never had a problem, and both have bigger bladders than I do, I swear. They're not as heavy sleepers as the older one. Good luck. I know how frustrating it can be (daily stripping of the bed, frustrated child). Personally, I'd try to wait it out if you can, although I don't believe the medication has any side effects you should be concerned about.

Ken, it will be both drip and sprinklers, drip for the flower beds and sprinklers for the grass sections. For the flower beds I have some RainBird XFS subsurface drip line that I will lay on top of the soil, then cover it with 4-5 inches of bark. I can't think of a way to get the sprinklers in without trenching at the edge of the patio. Here is a rough sketch of my vision of my yard after this project. The green areas are grass, the pink areas are flower beds. Here is a photo of the area from a different perspective. The red flags are a rough placement of where I will have curbing installed to separate the grass sections from the flower beds. Here is a picture of the trees from the other end of my yard. There are two sets of trees, one set of trees I fear needs to come out in the next 5 years, the tree hasn't looked healthy since they build the houses behind my house around 3-4 years ago. Every year more and more branches fall and it has a lot of dead branches. Here is an example picture. This tree also is growing into my neighbors house as seen by this picture. These trees are leaning pretty severely because a power line used to run the property line, so the power company would trim the clumps of trees in a V formation. I fear this tree will fall on my house before long Luckily when they built the houses behind me they moved the power line so I am starting to grow a replacement tree(actually just nurturing a couple babies that I hope can one day replace the existing trees). Here is a picture of my favorite replacement so far. I cleared some of the existing trees branches so sunlight hits this area from around 5PM to 8PM, as this tree grows I will continue to trim back this dying tree until I finally remove it.

No! Drip irrigation use polyethylene tubing as the main water delivery to the drippers. You will have to attach it to your existing PVC.

The main (lateral line) is not buried. Run the existing PVC under the patio toward one side of the bed (closes to the valve). Then attach the Poly to the pvc. From here you will be able to curve the ploy (its flexible) above ground and run it along the length of the bed.

How big is the hose on which the emitters are attached?

The Micro tube that connects to the main Ploy line is 1/8". This is the line where the emitters are attached

Armed with your suggestion and the diagram, I went to an irrigation and landscaping business and picked up the materials.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond so promptly, as I am on a bit of a time schedule. Wish there was some way for me to return the favor.

No problem. One more thing.

If you have a small grouping of plants you can snake the Micro tube through groups. No need to have an individual line for each plant. A larger plant or small tree should have its own Micro line.

Should the emitter be placed at the main line with the 1/4" tubing going out to the plant or the emitter at the end of the 1/4" tubing?
