Need a Favor for a Cub 2145 Owner

OK Â working on my Cub 2145 deck project. Take a look at the photoÂs below. IÂm missing the right front roller bracket. The plan is to fabricate a new one, but I need a little help. It would appear that the deck is off-set at an angle with the right side slightly back than the left. This means the right bracket that IÂm going to make should be longer than the left Â but I donÂt know how much longer. If anyone out there has a 2145 with a 42" deck (or has access to one) I would appreciate a reading on the measurement below. From the edge of the deck to the most forward point of the notch.

Not neccessarily true. I looked at the line drawing as well as the photo. I presume the line drawing is excerpted from "a manual"? That the deck is now "slewed back" on the right side may just be the result of the right side bracket being absent (the deck is further back on that side because it is not held by the needed bracket). The line drawing "appears to show" the right bracket being longer than the left, but that may just be the draftsman adding a bit of "parallax" or "isometric projection" to the drawing in order to lend a 3D effect to a 2D drawing. Hopefully, one of the Cub owners (or a fan) can provide the dimension you need, or at least a photo of an intact deck. BTW, you did very well in providing photo and graphics with your post.

You are correct; these illustrations are coming right out of the ownerÂs manual. Take a look at the one below Â the deck is surely set back further on the right side. I looked around for a used shell on the internet the other day. Although I wasnÂt able to fine the exact one I need, pictures of similar shells showed the right bracket slightly longer with both brackets slanted to the left about 5 degrees. After seeing that, and looking in the ownerÂs manual, IÂd say my suspicions are correct. I hope to God someone chimes inÂ

Most of the air cool manufacture do these days say to use 10W30, the oil they sell with their name on it is just that. Many of us old timers still prefer straight 30w for mowers because they generally are warm to hot weather use engines. Under extreme conditions or when oil isn't changed as often as it should be, multi-viscosity oil can break down and become its base stock rating which is the low number. Improvements may have been made so this doesn't happen like it used to be but us old farts just feel better about using straight 30w. obviously, air cooled engines used on snow blowers or other cold temp machines NEED something like 5w or 10w30. The engines owners manual will give a temperature scale as to what grades of oil are acceptable for the temperature the maching is being used for. There will be a cross over from one to the next. Straight 30W is generally considered acceptable at something like 40 or 45 degress and above. How many of us mow our lawns below that? Some may, some may use their mowers to collect leaves in the fall when temps dip. Odds are you also will find your oil changes call for twice per year by the hours you use the mower. So just run straight 30w in the summer and multi's in the winter. Not so hard to do.

Thanks for the replies and advice. After looking at the Simplicity Regent, JD X300 and X320 I'm of the opinion that the JD's are way overpriced. Also looked at Toro and Hustler ZTRs but I can't see spending that kind of money. The Simplicity dealer assures me that the Regent is all the mower that I'll ever need and is willing to bring one to the house for me to try out. He pretty much told me that the differences between the Regengy and the Braodmoor were nil for my purposes. I'm going to take him up on the offer and see how it cuts and handles. The JD dealer was a slicky boy that acted like he was doing me a favor by showing me a tractor. Stopped to have a few beers at the local watering hole and ran into the gent that works on my equipment. He says that I can't go wrong with the Simplicity. We'll see I guess.

I have a Craftsman 917.255810 42" 19 HP Briggs & Stratton Fast Auto TurnTight® Riding Mower equipped with a General Transmissions RS800 CVT (constant variable transmission). It was purchased on Black Friday, Nov 24, 2017. I also purchased the correct Craftsman 9 bushel, 3-bin bagger to fit the mower. I used the mower to 'get up' leaves 3 times in the fall of 2017. I stored the mower in a shed, out of the weather, until this spring. I have used the mower 2 times to mow my lawn. Basically to knock down the onions and dandelions. There was little or no 'real' grass to mow yet. My front yard has a slope that I run side to side on. The CVT started sticking, becoming difficult to change from forward to reverse and back, in the fall. In the Spring it became an issue to the point I contacted Sears Service and they sent out a service technician. He was a contractor for Sears and had enough work with Sears that he didn't do anything else. One of the common problems with this CVT is debris jamming the exterior workings, ie. Variator Levers, Inversion/Variation Control lever (forward/reverse), Drive Variator (variable pulley), etc. The Sears Tech said that my CVT was one of the cleanest he'd ever seen (I attribute this to the few times I had a chance to used it & blowing it off with a leaf blower.) and was not a debris problem or issue. The short of it was that the CVT was failing. The Tech said that the GT CVTRS800 was one of the main issue on most of the calls he was dealing with. He said that Sears & Kubota had gone away from it and were mainly using a hydrostatic transmission again. He did say that John Deere was using it in their new 'consumer grade' mowers sold at big box stores like Lowes & Home Depot. My options were to continue to call Sears Service for 2 years while the mower was still under warranty, then purchase a yearly Service Contract for about 1/2 the cost of replacing a CVT, or try to sell the mower and purchase something else. The Tech did say that he had worked on one CVT RS800 equipped mower that didn't have these issues. It was used on a yard that was about an acre or less and as flat as a 'golf course putting green'. The Tech is coming back in a few days to replace the CVT at no cost to me. The Tech said that the CVT was originally designed to drive the blades and wheels of snow throwers/blowers and it did fine at that. GT tried to repurpose it for Lawn tractors to less than mixed results. I guess I'll ride this horse for two years and then try to sell it to someone with a pool table flat lawn. I'm also with toefungus wondering if there will be a Class Action Lawsuit as a result.

If you take care of it, it will last a few years. The Cadet 1170 actually has a whole lot in common with its fellow MTD products, Yard Man, Bolens, and Troy Bilt. As a matter of fact, it's nearly identical to the Troy Bilt Super Bronco LT. Sadly, the only thing it has in common with a Cub Cadet is the paint. I was duped into buying an 1170 a couple years ago by my very old widowed great aunt, under the guise that I was buying a Cub Cadet. This tractor is not a Cub Cadet, it's an MTD Cadet, sold by Cub Cadet dealerships as an entry level lawn mower, but not to the standards of a Cub Cadet. That omission of the "Cub" on the hood was not accidental. After picking up the tractor I was initially overjoyed to be the proud owner of a premium lawn tractor, but the more I used it, the more I realized it was no modern marvel. The transmission is automatic, but not hydrostatic. It uses a set of cones which vary the size of a pully to make the wheels spin faster. It's low maintenance, but also very low durability. Do not pull any ground engaging implements, not even an aerator with this tractor or you will ruin it! You can't quickly reverse directions like with a hydrostatic, so make sure you come to a complete stop before shifting into reverse, then take your time. The transaxle will not stand up to quick fore-aft movements. You're right, it does have a cast iron axle, but don't fool yourself into thinking there is anything "tough" about this mower. After a season of mowing and doing other yard chores, I realized the needs I had in refurbishing a lawn (pulling a plug aerator, cartloads of sand...) would destroy this machine, so I sold it and bought a garden tractor. On the plus side, you did get a very good deal. I bought mine from my aunt in like-new condition for the "family price" of $1,000 with 50-60 hours. At the end of the season I sold it "better than new" for the same price with another 20-30 hours (I added tail lights). Of course I didn't point out to the buyer that it wasn't a Cub Cadet, nor did I ever refer to the "Cadet" as a "Cub Cadet." But I have a hunch he believed he was buying a Cub Cadet, just like I did, just like you did. The Troy-bilt version sells for $1299, so you basically got it for half price, a quarter of the way through its service life. I believe the retail price of the tractor a few years ago was $1799, which was a bit of a rip-off for what you got. It can't even be compared to the Cub Cadet 1045 selling for the same price 5-7 years later, with a hydrostatic transmission, 46" deck with 4 anti-scalp wheels, 20hp Kohler... As long as you meticulously maintain this machine, don't wash it after use (use a leaf blower), and do nothing but cut grass, you should get a couple hundred hours out of it. I don't fault my aunt for selling me the tractor (unseen) under false pretenses. She actually thought it was a Cub Cadet. And so will your neighbors!

OK, I revisited the line drawing again and it does indeed appear the draftstman "drew" the right side bracket as a longer item, not just the effects I cited in my other post.
In lieu of getting the real dimension, you may be able to utilized some other parameter (like maybe matching the distance from the rear of deck to the drive tire on both sides) to determine the correct (or nearly) orientation of the deck. Then you could measure from the leading edge wall of the deck on the right side to the trailing link to arrive at a working dimension.

You might use the assumption, yea I know, that the anti-scalp wheels are meant to roll straight ahead as an indicator of the correct position of the deck relative to the tractor.

Many thanks! Believe it or not, this really helps. Interesting, if I measure the right and left brackets, seems the right one is 33% longer than the leftÂ ThatÂs a believable number. If this is correct, all I haved to do is measure the left & divide by .66 to get the proper length of the missing bracket.Â. Just one more variable to throw into the project. I have some steel plate on the way Â should be cutting, drilling, & grinding this weekend.

BTW, got the machine running last weekend. Put in a new battery, pumped up the tires and bang Â running. Well, almost Â I did pull five mummified mice and enough yarn to make a sweater from between the engine cowling and flywheel Â what a mess.
