Nearly everything you never wanted to know about antifreeze

The discussion in a different thread meandered to the use of automotive antifeeze (as an agent for weighting tires) and the poisonous nature of this product. The "old standard" ethylene glycol based antifreeze is indeed highly toxic to all forms of life. There is a newer formula antifreeze on the market now which is based on PROPYLENE glycol. Propylene glycol itself is listed as nontoxic and is used in many consumer products such as food, drugs, and cosmetics. Propylene glycol based antifreeze IS NOT completely "nontoxic" (due to other chemical in the product such as corrosion inhibitors, dyes, etc.), but is "less toxic" than ethylene glycol based antifreeze. I am going to try including a link to a site that has a list of FAQs about automotive antifreeze use and recycling.

Here is a link that might be useful: Antifreeze use and recycling
