Need Tree ID help and question

Hi,

Please look over the three photos below all of the same tree growing in Florida. A relative of mine ask me if I can get this tree IDed and if she possibly could start one using the best method if there is one to get another tree started from it or parts from it. I see on the photo showing the trunk what looks to me like suckers. Can one remove them and try to get them to root or can and the air layering method be used as well? Any tips at all will be appreciated. Myself I don't know what to advise her to do that I could say will produce results. I hope someone will come up with something.

Probably a kind that would be raised from seed or sometimes grafted. Trunk sprouts don't seem a likely means of increase under ordinary circumstances.

It would be hard to air layer with that pruning job & reaction, and I agree with bboy that sprouts likely won't be able to hold the apparati to layer. Whether pruning and sticking will work is anyone's guess, as I'm not familiar with that tree (westerner) so can't go to my texts for instruction - usu something like that is seed-propagated. But I have the texts in my library for propagation instruction if someone can ID.

Hi Vinnie, Disclaimer: I am no expert. I started my orchard in 2008, found this forum, have learned from my own experience and reading the forum for the past 5 yrs. Different people will probably give you different opinion. From the pic, I strongly suspect that the grafted cultivar had died and what you've left with are rootstock sprouts. The second pic shows damage to the trunk. It could be a rabbit damage from way back or from a disease. The lower part of that damaged area looks like it's caused by a disease (fuzzy pic). To me, all things considered, I'd give up on this tree. It has been repeatedly damaged to the point that you don't know what you are left with. The trunk does not look healthy and the overall growth of 4 ft in 4 yrs is really not good. If you don't know how to graft or don't want to graft a known cultivar to it, it's not worth keeping, IMO. If you still want a peach, you can buy it bareroot from a number of reputable on-line nurseries. If you don't want to bother buying on-line, buy a potted peach from a reputable local nursery. I'd not buy from Lowe's or Home Depot even though it's cheaper. Mislabeling seems to be a common mistake there. Other people may suggest you keep this tree. To me, peach grows fast. You can possibly get fruit in the secod year after planting and definitely in the 3rd year, granted with no animal or disease damages to it. I hope others would chime in. There are a lot of experienced peach growers in this forum esp. Olpea who owns a peach orchard.

Hey Joe, Thanks for the reply. Question: is it true that these grafted limbs will not grow back? Maybe I shouldn't have? Also would you know whether bunnies have a taste for the leaves? If you look at the first pic you'll see theyve been gnawed back.... Anyways thanks for your help.

Excellent firewood, comparable to White oak or Hickory. Splitting is easy, if you're not trying to split a crotch. I do it every year with an axe, a maul and wedges. If the trunk is clear, maybe you could get some lumber for small projects - quartersawn is best.

Tree Fern: Need help with ID

Not a difficult one to identify - it's Cyathea contaminans, a distinctive Sphaeropteris-type Cyathea tree fern that's very common right across the Asian wet tropics. Unusually for a tree fern, it's even capable of producing multiple crowns when it gets older...very strange looking. Do you have suitable conditions where you're living to care for it? People have an annoying tendency to disappear on this forum after asking a question, but I'd love to know more!

I just sent an email to my relative asking her if she has ever seen it flower. Remember I am PA and she and the tree is located in West Palm Beach, Florida. If it could just be IDed then she could go and try and buy a young tree in her area.

I'd say it looks like a Mahogany Tree (Swietenia mahagoni) native to South Florida.

Thanks people---kmano4 I Googled the mahogany tree for photos. It looks something like it but I can't say for sure.
I would be able to give a much better description and close up photos if the tree was located near me in PA.
I have not heard anything back concerning the tree producing flowers or not.

Two other suggestions I received where hickory or pecan--what do you think?

Definitely mahogany - common in south Florida.
Not Hickory or pecan. Plus these are not commonly found in landscapes in
south Florida.

Yes, the leaves aren't at all correct for Pecan, nor too similar to any other Hickory either.
