Identify Old Ariens Sno-Thro

Hello,

My mother just gave me her Snow Thrower that was given to her by her Grandfather so it is very old.. She said that it is a model from the 1960's

The aluminum plate attached on the flywheel cover is no longer there so I don't know the engine model.

I don't know the model of the snow thrower either.. If there any way to find this stuff out?

I just know that it is a 24" clearing with a 6hp Tecumseh Engine that starts up like a champ and clears snow!

My brother repainted it off white about 14 years ago.. I plan in brining it back to orange in the future..

Can you post a picture? The engine model,spec and serial numbers numbers should be stamped into the blower housing.

I can get a Picture.. It is not pretty right now...

I don't see any number stamped into the blower housing on the Tecumseh Motor. There used to be A metal tag riveted or screwed to the blower housing with numbers stamped in it.. That is long gone.. :(

Based on a question in another forum: Plow guy does one car width down the drive (which is almost 2 cars wide). Once a snow storm our drive and garage bays get plowed. However, eventually we get boxed in due to the snow. So I have been using an old, old snowthrower to move the boundaries of the drive out to its edges and to clear the sides of the parking area. I also make a circle around the house to keep a clear path from each of our doors. I have two younger children and my wife wants a path in case of fire so we wont have to struggle through 2 or more feet of snow to get to the driveway while carrying kids. And from that path I make a loop across the back lawn out to our compost. I broke the path early and have kept it clear through all the snow storms. Only issue is the current snow thrower only clears about 10 feet and hardly any height. so my paths are getting boxed in on one side and I can not clear the banks in some places now. Watching videos of all the newer machines (the one I am using is 30 years old) they throw like 8-10 feet high and 20-40 feet out. AMAZING! So, Driveway: I have an incline. I make probably 3 passes on each side at 24" width to expand the drive from one car to two cars wide. Mail Box and End of Drive: I clear 50ft of street plowed embankment to let the mail lady get to our mailbox. If the plow guy does not make it before 5:30am, I clear the EoD and then my wives Subbie and my Frontier crawl up the drive and out. House Paths I keep the area between the garage of the side of the house clear, and.. I circle the house with a loop to the compost.

Hello Everyone I have had problems getting into the GardenWeb forums, but it looks like the issue has been fixed. What I wanted to really know is, is this forum still viewed by anyone? I could take some pics of a couple units that I modified last summer. I currently have about 8 snowblowers. -Toro 3521 (I a couple of years ago put a 11 hp engine on this. But we did not get enough show for me to pull it out. I also took the engine off because it had to sit back a little too far. So it made the snowblower too light in the front. I would have had to add weight to the front to keep it down) -Toro 521 (have 2 units. One modified with 7.75 hp OHV it's awesome). MTD 524 (have 2 units. One modified with 11 hp OHV). -Ariens 520 1984 model Just picked it up for $50 not running and in very good shape. I will try it out before I do any mod's to it. -Montgomery wards 524 1980 Looks almost new never repainted, paid $40. -Honda HS520 I picked it up not running for $100 has electric start. I have a 1970 and the 5-7 hp are the same. A B&S Intek Snow 7.5 fits right on, but you have to reroute the chute crank if you use an OHV engine (including Tecumseh). If the mounting is a steel stamping, you also have to cut off and drill out the old mounting bolts and put in longer ones. They have great power. Less than $300, delivered. You can also buy 8 or 8.5hp Tecumsehs for about the same price, but I don't remember if the mountup is the same - you can look at the line drawings. Some people are even buying the Honda clone 6.5hp engines if they keep it inside or don't live where it's too cold. They run around $150 delivered. You can sell your old engine on eBay for $40 to $125, usually. Please post any questions here, rather than email me.

I am about to buy a snow blower and have done much too much research for the purchase. I have found that the 7.5 HP Tec engine on the compact Ariens definitely does have a sylinder bore liner, while the 5.5 does not. I will have to check the series on the 6.0 HP to see, but the 7.5 power will probably push me that way even if the 6 also turns out to be the more durable engine. You can find the specs on the Tec engines on their website. The B@S Intek is harder to research. The B&S site does claim that another small engine has a sylinder liner, but they make no such claim for the Intek. Combined with a repair person's claim that the Intek definitely is not sleeved, I am guessing that it does indeed lack the liner. Good luck! Dave

You have a diamond in the rough.....the engine is a Tecumseh H60 (aluminum block) if it's cast iron its a HH-60 ,but I doubt it ....your engine should have points and condenser BTW,and be sure the front gear aasembly has plenty of oil ,B/c it is a ring and pinion gear set up and costly to fix ,if run out of oil .....I believe the oil used is 80-90 weight ....I gave one of these to a friend years ago with a 5hp engine on it (I installed the used 5hp engine) it's still going strong and he loves it ....plus it was free !

Yeah it looks rough, but everything on the thing works...

I thought it was an H60... Is there any way to retrieve a serial or anything so that I could get a new Choke Lever and Etc... Right now I use the Primer Button to choke it..

It looks similar to my early 70's, except that the "lockout pin" arrangement on the left handlebar predates my "safer" model.
I would remove the carb cover and see if you could attach a piece of sheet metal to create your own choke lever.
Interesting handlebar arrangement to brace the chute angle control.
There may be a stamped number in the bottom plate near the rear of the machine.
I would look for a few similar models on Ariens website to figure out a close match. My early 70's required a grease in the front gearbox, not gear oil. From what I remember, later models could use gear oil due to better sealing. If I can find my manuals, I will post again with an update.
While your brother's 14 year old paint job seems to have aged well, it will look better in Chevy Orange from Duplicolor.

No number stamped on the back plate of the machine, but I found a sticker my brother painted over.. Laquer thinner get it off without ruining the sticker? heheheehehe

It looks just like the one that is broke on mine...

I took this number to my local tecumseh service shop and they are going to order it so that I can take a peek..

If I like it then the part is 8 bucks.. Much better then paying $16 on ebay. Otherwise I would use jacks small engines for 6 bucks, but I want to support my local guy!

The choke lever sounds like a bargain.
I realize that the Ariens site requires a model and serial number to access the manuals- something you don't have easy access to.
Go to Ariens dot com, find the customer service tab, then click on manuals.
The model and serial numbers from my 74 this might get you started in the right direction.
For the tractor (drive) part, enter m/n 910018, s/n 008550. For the auger part, enter m/n 910017, s/n 016800. Select the electronic downloads. You might be able to play with serial numbers to get an earlier manual that matches your machine more closely.

Yeah.....

The engine still runs good... Too bad Tecumseh is done with engines..

Maybe if this engine takes a total crap it might be fun to experiment with a diesel... hehe

I ve got 2 similar Ariens running using parts from a 3rd. The Tecumseh engines are pretty amazing considering they are over 30 yrs old. So far,only 1 out the 4 I have rescued has failed. As far as I can tell, its either the condenser or the coil. A minor detail I solved by swapping the blower unit onto the good running tractor unit. Tecumseh may have stopped building engines, but their engines will be around for many more yrs.

After putting on the new choke, I can get it started in 1 pull. That is even when the temperature is in the teens.

Well its a 1964 - 1974 10,000 series machine.
you can tell that from the bucket.
cant really pinpoint the year closer than that without the model number..

Take a look at the left-rear portion of the tractor body,
see if there is a model and serial number stamped into the frame:

{{gwi:323029}}.

If its there, and you can read it, please post the numbers!
perhaps the exact year can be determined..
