ok, i know a 16x6.50x8" tire is 16 tall, 6.50 wide and fits a 8" rim.

But what size is a 480/400x8? is 4.80 the inch width measurement? if so what is the 400 number for?

I need a pair of tires least 16" tall, but not as wide as 6.5 inches.And everything i find on line is 6.50 except for the 480/400 tire which has no other specs listed to compare.

I believe 4.8" is how tall the "rubber" is on the tire, they are 4.0" wide and fit a 8" rim. They are usually used for wheel barrows. What is the use for this tire? Are you just replacing your OEM front tires on a tractor with something narrower? If we know you issue we may be able to give you some other ideas for a solution.

no, i found super lug in this size tire, and yes, i do need a slightly more narrow tire.
I had 16x6.50x8's on it, some cheap brand that only says "made in China" on them, and it was ok. I busted one and put on a Carlisle of same size and the Carlisle is least a inch wider, so when i run over something that lifts that side up, and i am in a turn, it rubs pretty good against frame. I could use small trailer tires, hi speed ones in similar size, but the tread is so smooth on them.And still i havent saw any yet to determine height or width, just thought someone may know. I would rather have the 16x6.50's cause they are 4 ply.
Just dont know if they would be width of my originals or the width of the wider Carlisle i have.
This is on a homemade tractor, so there isnt any original size that came on it.

What your missing is the tire clearance on your tractor? First you need to see (measure) how much clearance you have between the tires and the inner fender area, top of the fender, and the outer side of the fender. IMO the differance between a 12 vs a 12.5 is minimal, the wider 12" rim blows the tires out more and the 1/2 inch may cause them to rub the fenders or rear axles. the difference between 27-8.5-15 are guite abit from 29x12x15. If I had to have the ags I would just buy the rims, put the ags on them, and have a extra set if you plan on keeping the tractor for a long time.

I wasn't aware of any tires coming in a 7 inch size but if that's the case, then I'd contact some of the sellers on e-Bay, such as Rustybore or Miller tire. Those guys are the Pro's and can tell you quickly if that is a correct tire size or not. They can also tell you what tread patterns are available. That will help you decide whether switching to an 8" rim size is necessary. All that said though, if these wheels are not powered by the engine, then tread pattern isn't relevant.

The pattern is quite common and is used by many manufacturers but you have to be careful of "offset". This is the distance between the very outside of the rim itself and the "center" of the wheel that bolts to the axle. If you get rims with the wrong offset, you might find that they will fit your bolt pattern just fine but the tires will hit the bodywork. The wrong offset in the other direction might change you ability to trim close to obstructions if your deck does not stick way out on each side of the tractors wheels.

Johninmd: The link that you posted takes you to Tires Unlimited. If you go to the Carlisle Tire web site at the link below, you can look up the the tire you want and it gives you the inflated dimensions. They have also been pretty good (to me at least) about answering emails in a day or so with questions about information that is not on their web site.

I have the Carlisle Turf Saver II on my tractor and you can get them for under $20 at Wally World. The Carlisle site says their mounted width is 6.2 inches versus 6.8 inches on their R/S tire. That would give you a third of an inch extra clearance on the inside. Their 15x6x8 will only give you .1 inches more clearance (at 6.0 inches even).

thanks, the Carlisle site was what i needed, to bad you cant get 480x8 superlugs in 4 ply, only in 2 ply.

Try fluid in the tires you have. It makes quite a difference and can be done for about $15.

these are front tires , and they are crap, one the sidewall blew out, and i think the other is not far behind, no name on tires, just "China"
