Red/Purple leaf peach tree

Hello everyone! I just have a question about my peach tree. Our friends had given it too us as a house warming gift, and the tag said it was a 'Red Haven' peach, but i know its not really. I am guessing they bought it from a big box store. Anyway, the leaves are purple or bergundy, so thats how i know its not a red haven, but it didnt produce fruit yet as of last year so i don't have that to look at, maybe it is part plum tree?...does anyone know what it could be? I have looked for info on the web, but haven't found anything. Thanks for any info you may have!

There are a number of red leaf peaches on the market - 'Bonfire' is one of the most common. Long, narrow foliage that holds its color well throughout the season. It is a dwarf, seldom getting much above 5-6' and while it does produce peaches, they are not the most appetizing :-) Grown more for its flowers and foliage.

Stock is mislabeled or a red-leaved cultivar being used as rootstock has replaced the 'Redhaven' scion. One such is 'Citation', from a cross between the 'Rutgers Redleaf' peach tree and the 'Red Beaut' plum tree.

Dead scaffold limbs comprise a symptom called "flagging" that are recognizable at a great distance from infested orchards. Cankers are elliptical, parallel to the long axis of the stem. Usually the first external symptom of such cankers is the copious production of amber-colored gum. Gum production is a natural host response to irritation, but gum production due to infection by Leucostoma spp. is excessive. As the canker ages, the gum becomes dark brown, and the infected bark dries and cracks open exposing blackened tissue beneath. Leucostoma canker can occur on weakened branches without the production of gum, especially if winter injury precedes infection. Surgically remove cankers. Cankers should be removed, and (if possible) burned, buried, or moved out of the orchard (Figure 17). Cankers on trunks and large limbs can be removed surgically in mid-summer when trees heal most rapidly. Surgery should be performed in dry weather with a forecast of dry conditions for at least three days. During surgery, remove all diseased bark around the canker and about 4-5 cm (1.5-2 inches) of healthy tissue from the sides and ends, respectively. Disinfest cutting tools between cuts with an alcohol or bleach solution. The resulting wound when finished should have a smooth margin and be slightly rounded above and below to favor rapid wound closure. The practice of covering pruning cuts in spring with a thiram-latex paint mixture provides some degree of protection against fungal infection. Sites of surgery heal best if left uncovered.

Laurie: Agree with Olpea that your peach tree is suffering from bacterial canker. No need for me to take an entire page to explain what it is; Google it yourself and read all about it. Bacterial canker is common on peach trees, and has nothing to do with borers. I dormant spray peaches with copper each season to try to prevent this disease from getting a foothold on my stone fruit trees. A tree with canker at that point on the trunk is a goner, since you can't really prune it off without destroying the tree. I can't get to your photos of the leaves, but if they are dead then so is the tree, regardless of your experience with some other tree that you do not specify. A spring freeze may temporarily cause damage to emerging leaves, but on a healthy tree they quickly recover. So that's not it either. Peach leaf curl is common in climates that have consistently cool, moist spring weather and a slow warmup, but curl must be a relatively rare occurrence in Colorado. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA

olpea, I have seen bacterial spot like this. New leaves are more susceptible and if it rained when they were young they can be the only ones hit. It is not common but if there has been a long dry period you will get lots of spot-free leaves and then when the rains finally come only the new leaves get it. In general diseases can take on many different forms depending on the weather etc. Sometimes bacterial spot is just red spots on the leaves, nothing else. On young plum leaves there can be so much missing it looks like an insect ate 'em. etc. Scott

I have 2 varieties of fruiting peach, bought last fall, bare root/dormant - 'Reliance' and 'Flat Wonderful'. Both are presently growing red/purple leaves, and both are growing from well above the graft. Whether they will go green as the summer moves on, I don't know. But I bought both on the basis of the description of the fruit, and I will be very upset if they don't bear fruit. Of course, the Japanese beetles may make the whole waiting period moot - they do seem to like peaches! The late frost did in the fruit for this year, despite what I thought was a sheltered spot - there's always next year, I guess.

We just moved to Huntington, WV and have been looking for another purple leaf flowering peach tree like we had in North Carolina. There are very few nurseries in the area and the ones we have been to ask us to call in the fall when they are ordering for the spring to see if they can locate one. If anyone knows how we can get one before then please email.

It will produce fruit but they are not anything you want to eat.

I have the Same Situation...Get one Fruit tree at The Big Box Store Tagged as “Red Chief Nectarine “.... Foliar it’s Totally Red or Burgandy Color now Has Little Fruits But They Look as Same As Little Peaches nothing close To A Nectarine (I have another 2 Nectarine Trees)....And Also it’s Pretty Tall around 10 to 12 Feet Tall...Don’t Know What Kind of Tree it’s That But I’m sure it’s a Peach (100 % Positive)...Any Help or Guess?....

HU&bunch of numbers, if it has red foliage it is not 'Red Chief'....only the nectarines themselves are red in color. Leaves are a standard green :-) But what it might be is impossible to tell without a photo of the tree and its fruit.
