Zephirine Drouhin year 2

I planted Zephirine Drouhin and Ramona Clematis together on this arbor near my screened porch (not sure if will be happy together?) I can't believe all the buds and the fragrance for just it's 2nd year.

Oh my, this is so beautiful; I can't believe this rose is so young. ZD always looks so romantic to me. You've created a lovely picture in your garden, which will only get better (and more fragrant!) as time goes on.

I'm in the city of Chicago. My own root ZD from Heirloom Roses is in it's 5th year and gets full sun. It grew a little the first year, a lot the second, and then exploded the third year. I didn't know anything about pruning and just cut it back heavily. It only bloomed a little in the 4th year as a result. This year I watched the Ashdown Roses videos on pruning (see below for picture of pruned roses). This year my ZD just started to bloom the other day (about 6 blooms - the first two to pop shown) and has hundreds of buds. I trimmed all the laterals to 12" and cut down a few canes (there are just so many!) completely at the ground. I trained the canes horizontally across the fence. I plan to prune the laterals (and new canes as needed) all summer just to keep it in control (middle picture is pre-bloom about a month ago). I'm not sure how that will affect bloom but otherwise it will overwhelm all the plants in the garden in front of it. Prior to planting the roses, I raised the whole garden (a six foot wide strip around my yard) up about a foot using cow manure, pine compost (my soil ph is high), garden soil that was there, top soil, and mushroom compost - holding it up with a short landscape wall of Home Depot interlocking pavers. I spent a small fortune on dirt. I fertilize a few times a year with granular organic rose fertilizer. Last year I used some Epsom Salts but this year I didn't have any. I sprayed in Feb. with a copper fungicide and put down copper dust around the dirt. I had bad black spot last year. The garden centers around here said everyone did. I mulch with cocoa shells. In Feb. I top dressed with the pine compost and cow manure before mulching last month. I have 3 other climbers (Jude the Obscure, a red one?, and Darlow's Enigma) across that same fence. They haven't yet bloomed this year. They were mostly all planted the same year (except the mystery red climber) and all bloom profusely and repeatedly but the first spring flush is the most intense. None of them are the monsters that ZD is. I've got 3 more bush roses in front of the climbers mixed in with my perennial and herb garden. It smells great in my yard.

I have a 1st year Zephirine. I've had about 2 dozen blooms this year and it has been a very vigorous grower, although it is still in the process of growing. Climbers like Zephirine need time to establish a large root network in order to throw out thick basal canes that have more length in them. I would just fertilize zephirine to try to cut back on mildew problems and let the rose grow as is for now. I cut out all my initial canes that were on it when I bought it down to the original basal canes a few weeks back after some new basal canes emerged. Doing so broke a few more basals, but the new basal breaks will emerge from the center and go straight up....mine are at about 5' right now. It's hard saying how far these new basal canes will grow up to, but I wouldn't prune much of anything this year considering if new basal canes do break and start growing, they will need time to slowly grow up and may just end up having winter die back or the tender new growth might get damaged once the cold comes in the fall if the canes havn't finished growing yet. It's hard to do, but for the climbers I think it is best to think about how much they are growing underneath the ground as opposed to above it in order to get great results out of them in proceeding years.

I planted it last spring. It's doing quite well. I have it on the NW corner of my yard, hoping it will climb up my deck. It did get mildew, even though I spray my roses. It's also a blackspot magnet, but you probably don' thave to worry about that. I'm not sure about the chill. ZD did lose some canes to winter this year, even though we had a fairly mild winter. But it was it's first year. I would have had a nice spring flush, but the easter freeze zapped most of it. It has bloomed sporadically since. But right now, I'm concentrating on getting it tall and not putting it horizontal enough to maximize bloom. Hopefully next year.

Zeffy produces a lot of new canes each year, and it will be a tangled mess if left alone. What I do is cut out some of the older canes to give the new ones room to spread out. I find it's almost always best to control the size of climbers by thinning them out instead of shortening the canes. This is a good job for early spring, before the roses are fully leafed out and you can see the structure you're working with. Unfortunately, Zeffy isn't that great of a rebloomer. Her spring show will take your breath away, and she will give you a smattering of flowers here and there from mid-summer onward. Connie

hosta, my Zephy is in it's 2nd year as well and has grown similarly. In the 1st year I only had about a dozen blooms, but it's quite vigorous throwing basals and has about 4 dozen buds right now ready to open...I'll be interested to see how it repeat blooms though.

Hosta, your pictures are gorgeous! This is the 4th year for my Zeffy, the first 3 years it was okay, but was absolutely covered with blooms this spring. I have it on my back fence to cover the chain link. I think it was Florence that posted a pic of Zeffy with Autumn Sunset, which I just couldn't resist ordering, and it's just starting to grow! Anyway, people would stop in the alley and comment on the Zeffy, it was really putting on a show.

I hate to admit to this, but mistakenly one hot night last summer left the sprinkler on all night, which really helped Zeffy, but definitely not my water bill!

I'm so happy that you are both enjoying Zeffy---She means a lot to me ---She is usually the first rose to bloom after a long winter and oh the fragrance----

would you guys recommend to buy zeffy with its own roots? are they really thornless?y

Our county extension agent feels that Zephirine is the perfect rose; no thorns, constant rebloom, no disease, and great scent. I ALMOST agree.

Oh my, after seeing your pictures, I can see that my Zeffy has gone totally berserk so guess it's time to cut some canes next February and get some semblance of order.
