Any water in the tank? ive been running into a few neighbors describing the same thing ... "sounds like its running out of gas - but the tank is full"....

One more thing - Check the direction of your fuel filter - they usually have an arrow on them indicating fuel flow.

Will fuel flow out of the fuel hose when you disconnect the hose from the fuel pump inlet fitting? What about the fuel filter, is it a "clear plastic" type? If yes, is the filter "showing" ANY gas in it? (don't worry if a clear filter appears "not full"). Disconnect the fuel hose from the carburetor. Put the hose end into a collection jar or soda bottle. Lower the hose and bottle toward the ground (might need to add a piece of hose to the fuel line to do this). With the outlet end of hose or line lower than the fuel tank, do you get a "good flow" of fuel into the collection bottle, or just a "momentary gush", followed by a weak stream or drips. If you don't get a "good" continuous flow out of the hose, the outlet fitting in the fuel tank may be clogged with debris and sediment. If you have never had a reason to "clean the tank" in 25 years of service, this could be "the time". Fact that it runs on ether (don't use ether BTW. far too "violent" for small engines. use spray carb cleaner instead) or gasoline into the carb proves ignition system is OK. That you have tried 2 carbs and a carb rebuild pretty much points to either a clogged fuel tank outlet fitting, or a clogged or pinched fuel hose. Do the "flow test" and if you don't see good flow, remove tank and do a thorough clean out.

This old flat head opposed twin has a vacuum operated fuel pump incorporated into, on the side of, the carb. I would suspect it but since you have put on a different carb, not too likely both have bad fuel pumps, but could be. I would check the vacuum line coming off the bottom of the fuel pump to the engine block for cranks, sealing.

I posted recently about a possible similar situation. It turned out to be the fuel line from the tank to the filter was slightly pinched by the tie wraps from the factory.

Replace the fuel line from the tank to the filter or hook up an auxiliary tank for testing, right at the filter.

Fuel filter is installed in correct direction, fuel and impulse lines are new unobstructed and clamped. Fuel pump and carb cleaned and rebuilt. No kinks in fuel line.
I'll remove fuel tank and see what's going on inside it today.

I'll keep ya posted on findings and what fixes it when discovered.

FUEL TANK REMOVED AND CLEAN INSIDE, NO CLOGS OR DEBRIS.
FUEL IN CLEAR FILTER AND FROM LINE TO CARB.
CAN FILL BOWL AND RUNS FINE, BUT WILL NOT PULL IT'S OWN SUPPLY FROM TANK. (I HAD THE TANK, FILTER AND ALL LINES ON THE BENCH.)
I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE IMPULSE PUMP, BUT WHAT CAUSES IT TO PULL THE FUEL INTO THE CARB AND HOW CAN IT BE CHECKED? I SUSPECT THIS IS WHERE THE PROBLEM LIES, BUT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT.

NO SIR, MY FUEL PUMP HAS ONLY TWO LINES.
(OLD FLAT HEAD TWIN.) FUEL FROM TANK TO BOTTOM AND PULSE LEAD TO LEFT SIDE OF PUMP FROM THE BLOCK FITTING.

Per my post above, the fuel pump is a part of the carb as is typical of this series of engine. I do not know of any way you can test the pump. Either it fills the carb bowl or it doesn't. What happens if you remove the gas cap, place your lips against the opening and blow hard? will the engine remain running if you do this? (don't inhale the fumes)

I would be inclined to say you messed up when you rebuilt the fuel pump but you have tried another carb with same results. Did you get a diagram with the rebuild kit showing the arrangement of the two tinny, tinny, springs in the pump? Are you sure they are installed in proper position. AND the impulse, vacuum line from the engine block connects to the BOTTOM of the fuel pump with the gas line connecting to the SIDE of the fuel pump.

Walt and ray09, my apologies for inadvertently posting that image. I was in a rush to get some things taken care of last night. I had loaded the image into the post and was set to go when I reviewed the thread and realized what a goofus deed I almost committed. Then I had to get up from the computer to check something else I had left "running" in the house. When I came back to the computer, I hit "Submit" and now we have a perfectly USELESS (to this thread) image of an "impulse fuel pump on a Kohler engine" posted in the thread. No sweat on the picture, but RU ROO on the connection info from Walt. I think the springs are OK, but the line connection may be where I got stupid!
No Walt, I did not get a diagram with the B&S kit, but lil spring on the post and one under pump flapper on other side of block I think??? I didn't try removing the cap and pressurizing the tank yet, that's a last resort because I hate the taste of fuel or fumes!! I'll keep ya posted.

After I did the carb and pump, I crossed the lines at the pump.
It's at idle now as we speak.

Don't feel bad, it hasn't been more than a couple of weeks that I had to argue and argue with a guy who said the vacuum line was not long enough to connect on the bottom. I told him he had it routed wrong.
