Mower dies when I turn the deck off

I've been having a problem with my Craftsman 17.5hp mower. I can mow for at least an hour with the deck turned on at full throttle with no problems. As soon as I turn off the deck and slow the engine down the mower starts sputtering and missing. It will eventually die. It will restart, but it runs rough. If I can get it to take the throttle I can turn the deck back on and it runs fine. It seems to run great while under load, with no load it sputters. I did turn the choke on when it went to die and the engine kept running a bit longer. It seems like its running out of gas. It only does this when its warm, not cold. I've cleaned out the carb, gas cap, air filter, fuel filter, changed the spark plug, and also cleaned the cooling fins. I don't know why it runs perfect under load, but sputters when it runs at slower speeds.

Any help would be appreciated.
