Simplicity Regent

I have been reading / researching this forum for almost 2 yrs and now I need to ask a question. I pretty much have decided to buy a Simplicity regent mower. I presently mow my yard with a 21" self propelled and it takes me anywhere from 1 hr and 45 mins to 2 hrs to mow the lawn. A close by dealer has a couple of 2005s still on his floor. A 38" deck with a 18 hp Kolher command an a 44" deck with a 18 hp Briggs and Stratton Vanguard twin. I could get by with the 38" deck but everybody has told me it is easier to trim around things with a 44 " deck. He wants $2150.00 for the 38" deck and $2350.00 for the 44" deck. Another local dealer has a 2007 44" with a 22 hp Briggs ELS twin engine for around $2550.00. According to Simplicity the 2007 44" has a K46 hd transaxle were the 2005 has a k46. Simplicity redesigned the Regent in 2006. Is the new design that much better or would you opt for the 2005s for the better engines. thanks

i'm not really up on all the pricing, but i thought there was a current Regent model starting at $1995? not sure what engine but i don't think there is any deck under 38". you didn't say the exact size of your lawn but if you can push mow it in 2 hours or less then i'd think a 38" tractor would be plenty.

i have a 44" Regent (12 years old) and unless they changed the overall deck/mower design i have a really hard time getting the deck slid out from under the tractor after i remove it (and vice versa). just doesnt seem to be enough room. unless i'm doing something wrong, 38" i'm sure would be easier.

Get the 05 with the Briggs Vanguard . You're not only getting a bigger deck for the extra $200 , you're gettting a smoother running v twin commercial grade engine vs. residential grade engines in the newer Regent models . I've got an 05 Broadmoor with that 18 horse Vanguard and it's one quiet , smooth running engine . Never cared for the Regent downgrade to the Intek or Intek ELS which Briggs did almost immediately after taking over Simplicity to cut costs . They should at least offer the Vanguard in the Regent in a premium model , because to get it now you've got to upgrade to the Broadmoor which goes for over 4K now (paid $3050 for mine 3 years ago) with no $300 rebate that Simplicity used to offer . The Briggs beancounters are now in charge at Simplicity , but it's good to see that you can still get a good deal on a leftover model at some dealers . Good luck in whatever you decide !

jptgs1, I can't imagine a 1999 Regent not having a free floating deck, but I could be wrong. I have a 2000 Simplicity Landlord, and is has the free floating deck + full rollers on the back of the deck. Love my Simplicity!!!! As for the no reverse: it could be as simple as the linkage adjustment from the pedal to the tranny. Mine was out of adjustment, and I had full reverse, but no forward after some maintenance was done. Pulled the right rear wheel, saw the adjusting rod was out of place, re-adjusted it, and I was in business. For $300.00, if this mower is in any kind of condition at all, that a real steal. The adjustment on the rod is only a single nut (1/2" I think) on mine. No biggie at all. HTH

Swimjim, Thanks for the response. I can appreciate your stepping up to the 22/44 for the beefier tranny. What do you think of the Briggs Twin engine compared to the Kohler Courage? For me the Kohler was a big improvement in terms of noise, from my old 8hp Briggs, and apprears to have plenty of power. Since my lot is fairly level, I felt the K46 would handle the tasks OK. I was concerned about pulling heavy loads, such as my lawn sweeper when it's full, but it handled that task with ease. I had fun comparing the Regent to other tractors. What I appreciate about the simplicity is they have kept things simple....much like my old '67. In fact, several basic design elements have not changed much...such as how the floating deck works. They have been proven to work...and did very well on my old machine. Features I liked the most.... The mow in reverse switch, that I don't have to hit every time I back up....unlike Deere tractors. I don't want some damn attorney telling me how to operate my tractor! Excellent ergonomics...this is a very comforatable tractor to operate. The frame design...which I feel is a more solid design than the 12 guage frames on other tractors I inspected. The K46 Transmission was important, as this apprears to be a good unit and suitable to my needs. It was one of the key reasons I did not choose a deere LA model...as they are currently using the T40(?) if I recall. It's interesting that their is an active discussion on the K46's right now. I wonder if mine is the same used in the X300 deere's? The electric PTO is nice...I only hope it is durable. The tight 14" turning radius is very nice...especially compared to the wide turning radius of my old '67. The price....at $2100 for my unit it is a reasonalbe balance between box store machines, and higher end Deere's & Simplicities. It is well built & IMO the "moving" parts are designed to last longer than most box store machines, and very close to what you get in the x300. I liked the x300 very much. It is beautifully built, but the price was a bit more than I wanted to spend, and the basic frame, tranny & deck design did not appear significantly superior. The engine is however very nice. Overall I am very pleased with this new toy....Happieness is a new tractor :). I highly recommend to anyone looking that they put Simplicity on their list.

mg2105, I purchased a Regent 18/38 a month ago, and I have been very satisfied. My old tractor was a 40yr old Simplicity broadmower that refused to quit. It deserved to be retired however, and my new Regent has performed every task I require with ease. The Kohler engine is wonderful and the tractor is very comfortable to operate. I'm sure you will enjoy this machine. I was like yourself, looking at a variety of makes, however, the Simplicity was overall a better engineered machine for just a little more money than the box store machines. The mower deck is very solid, and provides an outstanding cut on my bumpy flat yard. The K46 transmission is ideal for a yard machine, and a step up from what most box store machines appear to use. The frame, assembly quality, and ergonomics are 1st rate. Overall I felt the Regent 18/38 was not engineered down to as low a price point as most box store machines, but was closer to the x300 in most qualities. Simplicty orange looks pretty nice parked in my yard too....I have to say. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

***"The wheels slip on this slope often and always while turning."*** Wheel spin, or wheel slip is more likely to occur when executing a turn, this is because of the nature of how a differential allows the inside wheel in a turn to rotate at a lower rate (wheel RPM) than the outside tire in the turn. The only thing I can think of that might make wheel spin or wheel slip occur when the blades spin might be due to the fact that when the blades are spinning.....you are cutting grass (who knew?) and that releases a lot of moisture/sap from the grass, which can be sorta slippery on the tires. So it might be due more to the grass being dry when you don't spin or slip that the lack of motion in the blades. But after reading the post above, I have to ask: Is the damaged belt the ground drive belt??? or is it the deck drive belt??? I guess I presumed it was the deck drive belt that has failed after 19 hours. I think that was what wheel_boy got too. The ground drive belt should not influence the deck drive belt operation, and vice versa! Except for when one of the belts decides to break. When that happens.....the failing belt often tries to take the other belt out with it.

It's a tough call; I was in a similar situation 2 years ago. I bought my Simplicity Regent in 06, and the dealer had some 05 models in stock, and a brochure for the 06 models. I chose an 05 with the 18HP Vanguard and a 40 inch dedicated mulching deck (the deck seems to be sold only in Europe). The deck hanging arrangement and suspension is different in the newer model. I don't know if it is an improvement, but it is different!

There are also some minor features on the 06 model like an hours meter, power socket, and cruise control. The 05 is a little shorter, which may help in any tight spaces.

In UK, the V-twin engine / 40 inch mulching deck combination was not available in the 06 model, and this was the decider for me to go with the 05 model.

The price also dropped a little with the 06 model - probably mainly due to the lower cost engines. The 06 model seems to have gained some weight, so the amount of material used hasn't dropped if that is an indicator of quality.

Go for that 2005 with the Vanguard engine. You won't regret it.

I have an 06 Simplicity Conquest with the B/S Vanguard, 21 hp, and the 44" deck. Great combination.
