Moonbeam hasn't reliably come through winter for me either from purchased or bare-root plants whereas Zagreb and Early Sunrise show up faithfully every year and bloom non-stop all season. I'm giving up on Moonbeam--love those pale yellow blooms but just can't be bothered with anything that finicky. Plants have to be tough as nails to withstand our harsh winters and sometimes parched/sometimes wet summers. When things thrive in these conditions, they get a star on my personal garden walk of fame. I don't waste time on those that can't cut it, no matter how pretty they might be.

My Moonbeam has come back every year for the 5th year, BUT, it is smaller every year. One of these years it just won't be here. I also had Coreopsis Creme Brulee right next to it, and it seems to have disappeared. It was probably run over by the John Coutts Bachelor Button that is trying to take over the bed!

Of the threadleafs: Moonbeam lasted 1-1/2 years for me. Lovely then WTH happened? Pfft. Zagreb has been great. Three years and going strong. The others: early sunrise, etc. do well but have to be divided every four years or so.

I've had Moonbeam for 3 years now. Cuttings root pretty easily, just stick them in soil & keep watered. At least it works for me. I haven't seen it for sale around here this year, but for some reason some things show up in the heat of summer. Rarely see this & echinaceas til late June/July.

My Moonbeam is also much smaller than last year. I also lost another coreopsis to last year's heat which DH said looked like dandelions anyway.

I don't like my Moonbeam enough to try again; will try something else in that spot.

I have tons of it in my yard. Comes back and spreads reliably for me.

I've had good luck with my Moonbeam. As a matter of fact, I just picked up three beautiful ones at Lowes for $3.50 each! Good luck.

Yeah, mine disappeared too. Over the course of a few years it got smaller and smaller and then it was gone.

Funny thing. This year, after I faced the fact that it was gone, there are three or four stems of it, about two feet from where it was originally. Go figure...

I got 2 good size ones. Finally.

I have had 9 moonbeam for the last 4 years. Out of the nine I have 5 still standing. The other 4 have dissapeared in the last 2 years.

I got three two years ago and now have two. I really have to baby them and make sure they have space, since they seem to get smothered easily. I do love the look, though!

I don't know if it'll help but a blog called northern shade said that she planted hers below grade - meaning the crown was below ground level and they returned faithfully. Maybe she's onto something. Now she's in zone 3 so that would take cold winters out of the equation. Another possibility is lack of drainage in heavy soil - plant would turn yellow during wet periods.

I have one left out of 3 that were planted two years ago...Spectacular with geranium Rozanne. I will try taking cuttings..it really is a pretty plant.

Anything that needs to be coddled doesn't belong in my flowerbeds so I'll pass on Moonbeam--reluctantly--unless I come across it on a markdown table at some point and try it again with that below grade planting. Sienna Sunset didn't come back either but that was definitely my fault so I'll give that one another chance if I find it somewhere. Zagreb has more than outgrown the spot where I originally planted it so that'll get divided this year and planted in a few other spots around the garden.

Mine comes back every year in several different spots with shoots off it that I usually pot up for someone. The only thing I can say is this is something I don't baby. When I have to water because of extreme heat, it gets a quick shot whereas my Hosta and Hydrangea get great big drinks. In transplanting it though, the roots are very shallow so I am going to guess that it definitely needs mulch or the roots dry out and mine are all mulched.

Mine die out too, and I love them. I have an extremely tiny clump of (rather pathetic) unknown trying to come back. And I broke down (for the last time) and bought a pot of moonbeam again this year. The drainage is excellent, so I'm unsure of cause. Maybe I'll put the moonbeam in a pot to use as container plant this year, and overwinter in unheated garage. I too hate perennials that need some pampering.

I read they like poor soil and the one that does well for me is in a garden bed that I did NOT ammend the soil. Maybe that's why they don't come back for some people = their soil is enriched and too good for them! :)

Question about my C. Moonbeam. It is in its 2nd year and shows signs of coming back, but the early growth is only 1/2", compared to my C. Zagreb which is approx. 7" at this time. The C. Moonbeam foliage that is popping through is also yellowish, not green. Should I give up on it and replace with another choice, or is this normal for Moonbeams? Our temps. have been hovering around 60F, 15C - much cooler than normal for our area in April.

Exactly what happened to my Moonbeam then one year, it never returned. The same with Creme Brulee.
