Oh no, mail order is breaking bud!

My midwest mail order plants from WI and NY (to say the least) starting breaking bud (before they got here). The leafing has completely stalled since last week.

They are in my garage until the threat of frost in gone (it will return no doubt). Its insulated so it stable in there and there are multiple windows.

This is a first for me with the 1st/2nd week of March with temps 30-35 degrees above normal.

I really don't know if I should keep them stalled or let them do their thing outside (bring them in when frost stops in to say hi).

So...........what are they? Trees? Shrubs?

All of the above. Several species of Acer, Viburnum and Parrotia. Tomorrow I'm going to find out if this includes Quercus and Cornus.

I can't be the only one in this boat..

I've pretty much neglected them in the past. Now I'm planting a home orchard over a 1/2 acre side yard so I'll be paying them more mind. In fact I recently gave each a handful of organic Citrus Tone fertilizer. With the Spring rains that must have sparked a positive reaction.

I'm very sorry that these nurseries are closing though I did not buy from any of them. Not to sound like a vulture but are they having sales? I was robbed by Chalk Hill's going out of business sale but might be persuaded to send some last minute business their way.....

It really is awful. Mine are the type that might not run around above ground, but they do use mole tunnels. I have both moles and voles, and so the tunneling is extensive. If you see holes in the ground that are like a quarter in diameter, those are the vole holes. I use 1/2 inch-spaced hardware cloth and cut it with straight-tipped "tin snip" metal cutters that look a bit like scissors. I'm really fast and good at making the baskets now :) It works wonderfully. I've seen holes where they tried to go in from below and couldn't do it, or where they changed their mind if they went in the top. When they hit the metal, they change course either way. I did have to dig up all of my established roses when the voles found the roses. I was losing too many, so fast! There is a bait that does not cause the same damage to dogs, etc, but it would hurt squirrels and smaller rodents that ate it. I bought some once but was still too afraid to use it. I just have so much wildlife here that I didn't risk it. The baskets work the best anyway, so that's how I handle it now. And I encourage the snakes that the neighbors had practically killed off. That'll help :D :D

Thanks everybody. I really am just freaking out here. It looks like you are all agreeing on a reprieve. Like I mentioned before, I missed the first infection and it got to be very, very obvious, so I'm hypervigilant at the moment. I was ready to tear all these bushes out earlier tonight! I'm going to cut off all the weird candelabras (except on Pink Pet) and watch. Spider Mites are possible--they are always a problem here. I can usually see a brown speck or two in the flower when I have thrips. I haven't tried the paper test, but will tomorrow. A few RMV questions--this is the first sign on this rose at year 5 of growth. I was under the impression that RMV was either there from the start, or not--in other words not contagious. Wouldn't this mean I bought it with RMV? Should I contact the vendor? I bought all my Belinda's Dream shrubs at once, so will the others be likely to have it eventually? Finally, is RMV systemic, meaning that pruning off the affected canes will do no good? I am really, really grateful for all of you tonight. I can't say how depressed I was earlier. Thank you!

I've run into this a couple of times, and in fact I expect it to happen. I've done the in/out thing, and it worked out fine. Also be mindful that some are much less sensitive than others to cold, so I would also try to fact that in as well. Less sensitive=more exposure IMHO.

I think this warm weather is here to stay, we are also 25 degrees above normal... in the upper 60's, with a couple of 70's. The reason I say that is because it's been warm all winter, mostly in the upper 40's for the high here. Normally our winters are around 15-20 for the high.

So far none of my conifers have broken bud, none that are planted or in the garage. However, 1 of my maples that I planted last fall looks like it's about to leaf out. Most of my hostas, daylillies, etc have started growing.

If we don't get any rain, by this Saturday and Sunday I hope to get everything I have in the ground.... conifers, trees, flowering plants, etc. The last thing I want is for my conifers to break bud in my garage. =)

Hey whaas, same thing has happened to me with with an 'Orange Dream' and a hybrid rose bush. I ended up moving the maple in the garage twice but I have left it out the last two times we went into the mid 20's. Didn't phase it a bit and it has continued to push new growth. However, I believe (more like HOPE AND PRAY) our last freeze has come and gone so I think mine will be fine. Hope your fair well brother!
