Comments (33)Well, I thought this problem had solved itself. The thing started well most of last year and until this week. I thought it had a stuck ring or valve, or a little bit of varnish from the modern gasoline. Anyway, I installed two champion CJ8 s, gapped to .025. And it started right off. Changing from NGK BMR4As Lot's of good comments on this thread. It's a little over my head. I'm assuming that if the composite camshaft gear breaks, it's definitely not going to run, correct? And further regarding this thing, is this gear failure always a fairly benign thing? That is nothing else gets bent or damaged when this thing goes? I had the case cover off to repair the inner gasket to prevent water from leaking into the crankcase, actually I don't think it ever went into the crankcase, but it eventually would not hold water even to mow the yard once. I then, wasn't aware of this issue with the composite gear and I'm not totally sure if it has the composite or not. I seem to remember looking at a brown fiber gear-looking thing. But I'm not sure. Thanks for all the comments, and I think it's just the spark plugs causing this problem. Although I'm not sure why long cranking worked to get it to start. Anyway...Cheers!...See MoreJohn Deere pto problem
Comments (9)I'd suspect either too much air gap on the clutch or not enough amps(not volts) to the clutch coil. The air gap can increase with wear, not positive what yours calls for but 10 to 15 thousnadths should work fine. If it's an amperage loss due to age and resistance build up of the clutch coil and/or wiring&switchs, a 30 amp constant duty relay installed correctly will cure that. The relays are readily available at any auto parts store, cars and trucks use them for fuel pumps, fans, and AC clutchs which are basically the same as the electric PTO. I installed one for the lights and one for the PTO clutch on my 1855MF and 1650MF. Mine are wired like a lot of lawn and garden tractors in that everything goes through the ignition switch. When running with the lights and pto on the ignition switch would get hot, the relays cured that....See MoreJohn Deere X304 PTO Problem When Warm
Comments (18)Have you removed the deck drive belt from the PTO? If yes, does the motor still die when it's hot with the deck drive belt off? If no, then remove the belt and see if the motor dies. Try new plugs correctly gapped. I've seen coils lose spark when hot. EZ to check... use insulated pliers to remove one plug wire when it's running funny. If it dies then that side is working. Try the other plug wire. If it stays running then you found the side the problem is on. either coil, wire, or plug....See MoreJohn Deere 420 pto problem
Comments (3)Either your PTO is going bad of it is as easy as adjusting your PTO air gap. I would say to just adjust in the 3 nuts with the springs around the PTO in a 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4 turn and see if it is better. There is an actual air gap setting to adjust the magnet space, but what I suggest s a quick check. If that does not work and your able to confirm getting power to the PTO, your PTO is bad....See Morejohnsinva
