hydrostatic issue with white tractor:50sd hydro 2500s 6sty

I bought a used White at the end of last season - I only cut with it a handful of times - it would occasionally do a chug and then lurch forward at full throttle. I cut with it once this year and the problem was much more pronounced - it wld often stop going down hills, then chug and zoom forward again. Second time I tried to use it, it wouldn't go forward at all. Goes in reverse just fine.
Called a repair shop and they told me to fill the hydrostatic oil. Which is apparently not a job for a not-so handy person, since it seems like you have to remove and take apart the tranny?
Can anyone provide info on how much this type of repair typically costs?
And any other suggestions would also be appreciated.
Thanks

How about the model number from below the seat? many of these transaxles don't have a place to access a fill point on top of the transaxle. If your fuel tank is in the rear, you will likely have to pull the body and tank OR remove the transaxle to get access to the fill port. if there are no signs of leakage, you may be best to remove the transaxle and do a drain and fill.
