Help In Finding Ratios for Tomato / Veggie Potting Mix!

I think that it was last year that I came across a soiless potting mix for tomatoes and other veggies on this web site. I wrote down the recipe and ingredients and then promptly threw it away after I used it. The ingredients include either vermiculite or perlite (cannot remember which), peat moss, bone meal, Osmocote, lime (not sure of the form), and triple super phosphate. Can anyone tell me the ratios of this recipe? I am looking for something in quarts, cups and tablespoons as opposed to net weight. Also, has anyone had any experience reusing this mix from season to season and by simply re-adding the bone meal, Osmocote, lime and triple super phosphate? Thanks in advance, GF!

Have you tried a Search in this and or the Tomato forum? If no luck try a Search on All forums.

There are many, many mix recipes scattered over all the forums and most any of them will work fine. Likely 50 of them on the Container Gardening forum alone, ;)

The basic container mix recipe is 1/2 each of peat and vermiculite. To that you can add the other ingredients you list as you wish. Each of them has label directions for how much to add per container size you are filling.

That should get you on track.;)

Feeling like I've made a difference by helping someone else get more satisfaction from their growing efforts is really the reason I'm here. It feels very good to know that. It's not a prideful thing - I feel 3-ways blessed. One way is that I'm able to help. Dear angierainbow83, Please think about the info from Jodi and Al. I add my own story below. Since thinking through my own experiences will help me too, I hope you don't mind. I believe for me, I need to separate the garden beds from my containers; just as a two bedrooms can be used differently while still being a room, a separate approach to garden beds (to use Al's words, more "organic") vs. containers (more "inorganic") is still gardening. Good luck on your journey! Over the past few years I seem to be suffering from a case of harvest envy. Due to space and location, I do not have the ability to grow vegetables in the ground due to shade, but I do have a very sunny spot where containers work fine. I have "successfully" grown various vegetables (and am lazily including tomatoes in this category). I say "successfully" since I have never been able to come close to the level of harvest that neighbors get when the essentially identical plants with similar methods EXCEPT the plants are grown in the ground. In fact, I can say this with with confidence since I have provided them with their plants. I have experimented with various combinations of top soil, organic potting soil, compost and small gravel. (I won't go into nutrient supplements I have tried.) I have used about 15gal lightly-colored plastic pots raised off the ground. Given my growing climate, young plants move into these pots in early May and typically are taken down sometime after Columbus Day. The plants are still producing, but the colder temps negative influences many of the types I grow. In the case of eggplant, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, for example, my plants are 5-6ft tall and produce a crop not quite sufficient for a small family throughout much of the season. When I take the pots down at the end of the season, I typically find the exterior soil to be damp/dry while the center below the stem and near the main roots to be very wet. Further, there are many small roots near the soil surface, possible due to the thin mulch layer I applied (thinking I needed more moisture retention). There are some larger roots that spread in the pots, but not a tremendous amount. The best fruiting, distribution and size of roots was in the year where I only used organic potting soil without a mulch cover. Although I can't say with 100% certainty that by making the soil more organic I caused this problem since from year to year I changed conditions (and growing conditions change too), the evidence is pretty well stacked against me.

Hey Tom: Thanks for posting the link to this thread. Very helpful indeed, and your garden is gorgeous, healthy and thriving. I must get some cattle panel--wonder how I'm going to fit it in my Mini Cooper! I've also had good luck making our Serious Tomato Cages using cow fencing. Finally, we have mater cages that are tall enough and strong enough to actually support the heirloom tomatoes that get over 8 feet tall. It's fun to think of and share creative ways to use products like cattle panel for the garden, isn't it? What else have folks used that works well? Stacie - have you read this instruction pamphlet on drying and using dried foods from NCHFP? Tons of info on all the basics. See link below. It gives you a table on rehydrating too. Dried vegetable soup can be any vegetables you want as long as they are all fully dried and as long as the particles are approximately the same size for rehydrating evenly. Otherwise you end up with mushy bits of onion or smushy peas while the green beans are still hard as rocks. So if you dice some then dice all, if you chop some then chop all, etc. For rehydrating you do it while it is cooking and rather than water we use broth - beef, chicken or vegetable - for flavor. Just begin with your favorite fresh vegetable soup recipe for amounts to measure out before drying them so the dried veggies will be in the same proportions when packaged. Personally I don't care for dehydrating previously frozen vegetables. They are soft and mushy, take much longer to dry than fresh, and lose most of their flavor in the process. Dave, I did see the posts to my two subsequent posts in the Tomato forum and Soil forum. I only re-posted my original question in these two other forums because I did not receive any response when I posted my original question in the Container forum on Sunday. Regarding your suggestion, I wonder how far back I can search a forum? I kind of remember finding out about this recipe about a year ago. As far as finding out how much of each ingredient to add, I must have some pretty cheap ingredients because I do not see any information like that, except for the Osmocote. I do have a container that I used when I originally made the recipe that shows marks (lines) for 2 cups, 1 cup, 1/2 cup and 3 tablespoons but cannot remember how much of each to put in. I fear that I will put too much triple super phosphate, lime or Osmocote and ruin my tomato plants. I sure wish I could find the original posting of this formula. I think I will try and bring the list of ingredients to my local nursery. Still if anyone else knows what the heck I'm trying to find, PLEASE send a response. The ingredient list, once again is: Peat moss, vermiculite or perlite, lime, BONE MEAL, and super triple phosphate; and the question, WHAT RATIOS? Thank, GF.

The Search works for all the forum threads listed in a forum, which is hundreds. The usual problem is too many hits; so I don't search All forums unless there are no hits in a particular forum.

I'm sorry I don't have the formula you mean but the link below has one that seems awfully close. At least you won't mess up by adding way too much of something. Hope it helps.

Aggie formula: "Many synthetic "soils" are available from garden centers, or one can be prepared by mixing horticultural grade vermiculite, peat moss, limestone, superphosphate, and garden fertilizer. To 1 bushel each of vermiculite and peat moss, add 10 tablespoons of limestone, 5 tablespoons of 0-20-0 (superphosphate) and 1 cup of garden fertilizer such as 6-12-12 or 5-10-10."

I believe you could substitute perlite for the vermiculite. I do find it easier just to buy pro-mix or lamberts (both soilless mixes) as they are pretty much made with the same ingredients.
