Comments (6)Is this engine equipped with a dipstick? Most of the mower engines built by briggs required the dipstick to be fully inserted in the dip stick tube to check the oil. If the dipstick is set on top of the tube, the oil level may be overserviced. Vanguards and Kohlers as well as some other brands do not require the dip stick to be fully inserted. Comments (6)Thanks for your input folks and sorry I haven't replied before now - had ticked the box "send me an email when you get a reply" and hadn't seen any sowas thinking I had no replies. I can't help but think that fuel shut off issue is the culprit as I checked the oil level before and it was fine - after the engine blew it was low - thought it must have flung some out but this makes more sense. What sort of $s are these motors in the US? - I wa\s quoted a "special" price of $1100AUD for a 15.5 Intek from localshop but there is one on ebay locally for $847 - details are 15.5HP OHV Premium Intek series. Model 31E677.0133.B1 with the std. universal 1" shaft. The deck is 42" and while I have 1 1/4 acres there';s lots of gardens so nota big job - only went with 42" as it was a good deal swcond hand - or so it seemed :( Thanks for your help & any more suggestions much appreciated - Graham...See MoreValve Clearance for 16.5Hp B&S
Comments (14)OK, you guys were right. I did have two seperate problems. When I went to cut my grass on Thursday, the motor was "hard starting" again. During the initial crank it did stop turning, which I suspect was that "stop on compression" you guys mentioned. It eventually started and I cut my grass and confirmed that my previous gas tank venting problem has been resolved. Later, I checked my valve gaps and they were not too far out but I am not sure what constitutes far out. First, I did Walt's test and confirmed that the intake valve seems to do a small movement after it closes that I believe is the compression release. I checked this before and after I adjusted the valves. When I first checked my intake valve clearance, at first I couldn't seem to even push a 0.005" feeler through the gap. Then when I played with the rocker arm it went though no problem. An 0.008" was very snug. So I took that as out of spec. for the 0.003"-0.005" it should be. Now, even with me playing with the rocker arm a 0.004" will go through but the 0.005" will not. On the exhaust side, when playing with the rocker arm, a 0.006" will snuggly go through but an 0.008" will not (I don't have a 0.007"). So I took that as OK for the 0.005" to 0.007" spec. and never changed it. When I was done the motor started up very well but I had that happen last week when the motor only sat one day, so next week I will be able to test for sure. It seemed to be more hardstarting when it sat for more then 5 days. Since I like to understand these things, I have a few questions that maybe someone could help me with: 1) Since the intake valve seems to control the compression release, how important is the exhaust valve clearance? 2) Does this compression release keep happening when the motor is running or just during start up? Seems that you would like it during start up and hate it during running. 3) If the valve gaps were to wide why would my motor seem to only have hard starting issues during initial start up but when warm it seem to start up just fine? Comments (10)A few updates... Mistakenly listed my model number as "31H777" when it is actually a "31P777." After reaching point of experiencing symptoms, I checked and didn't notice the choke butterfly being stuck in a closed position. I moved the throttle lever back and forth, but there was no improvement to the conditions. I received Walt's detailed instructions for checking and adjusting the valves, as well as some of the other troubleshooting suggestions. Here are my findings: 1.) I tried the test in the last paragraph (which was to look for an additional little movement on the intake valve, just after it was all the way in, which would verify the compression release), but didn't notice any additional movement towards fully closed. 2.) I followed the instructions for checking and adjusting the valves. The intake valve did need adjusted, so I made the appropriate adjustment. I also tightened a bolt that was a little loose on the rocker arm for the intake valve. 3.) I checked to see if I had spark (with the spark plug removed); that checked out fine. 4.) I turned the engine in the direction of operation (hand on the screen) before I started mowing (i.e. before any symptoms are observed). It was a little tight at one point (which I believe is right when I was getting to TDC, since I also noticed it when I was adjusting the valves). I then did the same test after mowing and experiencing problems... this time, there was a groaning kind of sound at one point (on every revolution). It sounded like something was "tight" and/or rubbing. Could it be compression or compression release related?
