Too Late for Serious Wisteria Pruning?

timberohio

I've had my Wisteria for about 10 years. When I first got it I worked a lot, didn't have time to deal with it and this stuff just went haywire. I did absolutely no trimming or pruning other than to remove dead vines. Now 10 years later I have 2 monster vines that look unorganized and just go everywhere. Is it too late to pick out 5 of the older vines and cut the rest or will this mess up the flowering that I waited 7 years for?

I've read that if you cut any new growth you can get them to re-bloom but I don't even know where to start because there is so much new growth. These vines are 10 feet tall on a gazebo and hard to reach. Beautiful when in bloom but unsightly after. If I keep cutting new growth will it eventually stop sending energy to new growth?

Would appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Andrea
