my john deere L120 will not start, it cranks over, but will not start any ideas as to problem and how to fix?

mwin, I see you are brand-spankin' new to the forum, so perhaps you didn't realize that we need more information before we can even start to assess your problem. Here are some of the questions that we need answers to:

1 What engine is in your tractor?
2. How long has it been since you last ran it?
3. Did you leave fuel in the tank and/or carburetor over winter?
4. Have you checked the obvious: fresh fuel in tank? gas shutoff valve open? any loose wires? is there spark at the plug? is the air filter clean? is the spark plug clean and properly gapped?
5. When it last ran, did it run okay?
6. When it cranks, does it seem to be at a normal crank speed, or does it just turn over s-l-o-w-l-y?

From what little you told us, my guess would be that you left gasoline in the carburetor over winter, and your carburetor is gummed up.

One piece of advice: DO NOT start turning those adjustment screws on the carburetor. Carburetors do not un-adjust themselves.

Sounds like your not getting any power to the fuel pump, I would take the fuel hose from the fuel pump to the carb and disconnect it from the fuel pump and leave it connected to the carb then feel the hose full of gas and see if it runs.

On your solenoid there are 2 small terminals . 1 will have a ground presents if all the safety switches are online and the other 12V when the key switch is activated purple I think. If you have both- maybe you have a bad solenoid. This is old enough to where corrosion at the ignition, fuse block and brake switch connectors could be present. If you can safely jump across the 2 large terminals and it cranks, that would satisfy that side of the starting system- that the engine is crankable and the starter, battery and main grounds are good.

Do you have a volt meter? IF so, check the voltage across the battery with- Engine off Engine at high speed Engine at high speed with lights, PTO etc. on. Everything off should be 12.6 VDC. With engine running & full electrical load, it should be 13-14ish volts DC. Also switch meter to AC to see if there is any ACV present. There shouldn't be. IF you don't have 13-14 DCV across the battery at high speed, do the following- Disconnect the plug to the Voltage regulator and measure the ACV between the 2 Yellow?(non Red) wires. Depending on the charge system used, there should be something like 28 or 40 VAC MINIMUM. NOTE- That's AC Volts. IF you have the proper AC voltage, the alternator is OK and the problem lies with the voltage regulator or wiring.

Try jumping the 2 LARGE studs on the starter solenoid. IF it cranks, bad solenoid. Clean all the connections on the battery cables. Also make sure the engine is bolted down snug to complete the ground circuit. Take battery to auto parts store and get it load tested. They'll do it for free. Just because it shows 12.6V, doesn't mean it has the capacity to crank the engine. 8 penlight batteries will produce 12V, but not nearly enough current.
