Can I put stale wine in my compost bin?
Comments (16)I brewed a batch of beer a few years back that turned out really bad. I mean this stuff would gag a skid row maggot. Anyway, I couldn't face my failure and just dump it out so I let it sit in the basement. Then last fall I got the bright idea of pouring it into my compost. I sprinkled a few bottles while I turned the stuff and man did that compost get hot! I tried it each time the pile dried out or needed turning and got the same results. I don't know about wine but bad beer can sure kick start a pile. Bene...See MoreI need a new compost bin... what do I need to look for?
Comments (3)Many local governments (city, county) in the US offer subsidized compost bins to their residents. I've seen the Biostack, Earth Machine, and at least one other model offered. Sometimes you can even get a worm box from these offers! Prices here in the Bay Area for subsidized bins run approx. 1/3 of retail price, give or take, so definitely check it out. I think the Biostack is retailing for $99 to $129, depending on where you want to purchase it, so $200 should get you some nice goodies, even if you have to pay full prices. Enjoy! Cynthia H. Comments (13)dalton thanks for the pics. I have been talking to my husband about making a bin. When I saw your pallets I knew that was the bin for me. Maybe because I can get the pallets free and it does not look hard to do. Swanz that is a very nice bin my hats off to you. I tried to do that once and my daughter just laughed at the finished product and my family threw it out. Oh well so much for building things....See MoreDid I screw up my compost bin?
Comments (22)Plywood would work if it's one single sheet across the entire bottom of the compost bin without one tiny little place for the roots to grow through. Roots will find the tiniest little crack to go through. They will grow upward or sideways, whatever it takes. They like the moisture in the compost pile. Been there, done that. You wouldn't think roots could get into sewer lines either, but they do. I'd go ahead and try it, and then this time next year, if your compost is a root matted mess, you can come up with plan B. I've even had shallow tree roots grow up into the holes of plant pots that were sitting under a tree. Deanna...See Moreericwi
