Roselee, Didn't want to hijack your thread into a discussion on glyphosate, so that linked article was sort of an oblique confirmation of your doubt that "glyphosate disappears from the soil very quickly." In fact, in Monsanto's own words: "...the tight binding of glyphosate to agricultural soils effectively prevents significant root uptake by nearby plants." This is what enables that nice ability of almost immediately replanting a treated area. Residual/cumulative glyphosate is not likely to be an issue for most home gardeners, but the research and debate in the agricultural space is moving me to become a bit more conservative in its use. The fact that non-targeted plants can be damaged when their roots are intermingled with targeted plants in small containers or the glyphosate becomes mobile in hydroponics is pretty well accepted. But it's reasonably argued that these are not representative of most yard or field growing environments. The exception is the warning shouted on the Roundup usage sheets about what several of us have advised: PRECAUTIONS, RESTRICTIONS: DO NOT MAKE CUT STUMP APPLICATIONS WHEN THE ROOTS OF ADJACENT DESIRABLE TREES MAY BE GRAFTED TO THE ROOTS OF THE CUT STUMP. INJURY RESULTING FROM ROOT GRAFTING MAY OCCUR IN ADJACENT TREES.... Adjacent trees having a similar age, height and spacing may signal shared roots. Whether grafted or shared, injury is likely to occur to non-treated stems/trees when one or more trees sharing common roots are treated. So, might not use it on a stump in a grove of similar aged oaks, but not likely to be an issue in your situation. Planting a new tree within 3 or 4 feet of the stump shouldn't be a problem as our own experience has shown... well, other than digging the hole through the roots of the old tree.

Dublinbay, I have not repotted the 1 gallon own root roses yet. I was going to let those plants go through the same process of acclimating to the temperature first. I recently received bands and potted them into 1 gallon pots. All have been placed on the covered patio, and at night, I place them in an area on the covered patio where they receive early morning sun, and then they are moved near the house, but still under the covered patio, in an area that is shaded all day;hoping that area is not as hot. I hope that giving the plants about 3.5 hours of morning sun will be sufficient but also not too extreme for them at this point? Thus far the plants that are a little over a week old appear to be growing. Because of the heat, I cannot plant them in the soil until mid-October. I check the soil with my finger for moisture about 3 x per day. I have planted the bands in potting soil; but it does not have fertilizers added like Miracle Gro. I was thinking of adding a very weak fish emulsion once a week during watering to add back some nutrients, but I am not sure at this point. This is my first "real" experience with bands and 1 gallon own root plants so I am really babying my new babies:) I have 15 that I am caring for or as you wrote " giving them love" :) Lynn

The fragrance and cut flowers are “swoon worthy”, to quote Carol. I’ ve been very pleased with all the Romantica’s I’ve tried. I’ve heard they love alkaline clay soil, and that seems to hold true for me! Heres the pictures of my new Moonlight Romantica. Can anyone tell if it’s grafted or ownroot? So our friends at Kordes have a new white climber, 'Alaska' http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.71050 The US patent was approved as of April 25th, 2017. It isn't showing up on Kordes website, or Certified Roses (who I believe is a new distributor of Kordes in the US). Does anyone have any idea how long it is from when a rose is patented to when we can get our grubby gardener hands on it? It's looks lovely, and from Jedmar's photo it doesn't look super-thorny (compared to the usual Kordes armaments). After getting slashed up by 'Quicksilver' again (this rose has drawn more blood from me than the rest combined!) I'm thinking maybe I want something less thorny than 'White Cap' to pair up with 'Florentina'. But how long is too long to wait?
