leaves turning black -- rugosa?

I have a new rose started from a cutting (3rd year). A few of the leaves are turning solid black starting about half way to the edge. It has been cold and wet. Is this black spot and should I just pull off the affected leaves (~6)? Will the rose outgrow this as the weather warms up (I'm an optimist).

It is not blackspot. Someone posted this symptom a few days ago, but no one had a confident diagnosis. I would not remove the leaves unless the plant has plenty to spare.

On a rugosa? that's very strange. Do you know which one? Not all hybrids are the same...
Can it be you sprayed the leaves with some chemical? Or maybe just with water but in the hottest time of the day?

I would not remove the leaves too, anyway, unless they are just 2-3 leaves all in all

My one was outside my girlfriends house in a tiny pot, in full sun and sometimes went without water. The stalks were long and widespread, the leaves had yellow streaks. There was hardly any soil anymore, just roots. It was tall but the leaves were few, a sign to me of a plant needing a new environment, or a bigger pot. We moved house and I moved the plant inside, and into a much bigger pot. I also trimmed about 6 of the longest stalks off. I watered her slowly, trying not to over water it. The leaves fell off and the plant kinda went into hibernation while it was adapting to it's new environment. About a month later the thing exploded into life as the roots had obviously taken nicely, and now it's in better condition than I've ever seen it. I also believe its good to cut the stalks down now and again (1 or 2 at a time). The leaves started going black too a short while ago, and just falling off (the whole leaf, not jut the tips). I think I was over watering it. So I left it a few days and started watered less frequently. Seems to be doing a lot better now.

FWIW - no plant likes or prefers to be rootbound, but some growers might choose to stress the plant by allowing it to become slightly root-bound as the stress of tight roots can cause a bit of an increase in bloom profusion. However, that shouldn't be interpreted as a signal the plant likes or prefers the stress; in fact, the opposite is true. The trouble is the Jobe's Sticks. They're notorious for allowing an uncontrolled amount of salts into the grow medium. I would 1) be rid of them completely (throw on ground around trees/shrubs) 2) Flush the soil thoroughly by slowly pouring a volume of room temp water = to at least 10x the pot's volume through the soil. This will flush the current accumulation of salts from the soil. After flushing, tip the pot at a 45* angle to drain excess water. Compare image B below to A to see what a difference it makes 3) get in the habit of watering on an 'as needed' basis, and fertilize regularly with a quality soluble synthetic fertilizer. I live in Buffalo, NY there's been a few colder days with one or two being below freezing. My apple tree had a few similar spots, so I'll remove those just in case.

If it's the species Rosa rugosa it's very unlikely to have blackspot. Rugosa doesn't get black spot very often at all. Damage from a chemical spray or some other fungus would be more likely.

I am curious that you are in Z3 and are able to grow roses from cuttings. Is this the beginning of the third year for this cutting? Even if it is a rugosa it must still be pretty tender so perhaps you have frost damage or freeze damage. We have had frosts lately just north of where we are. To the best of my knowledge rugosas do not get BS.

Rugosas do get BS, but usually those that are species or close to them (not heavily hybridised ones) stay healthy. Rugosas like Agnes, Grootendorst, Robusta, Fimbriata get as much BS as other modern roses. Even Hansa and Frau Dagmar Hastrup will get BS if conditions are "right" for BS.

Solid black leaves sounds either chemical, freeze damage, possibly root rot, tho you usualy see that on canes as well. What is your drainage like? Black spot is spots. I'd remove them. Whatever it is isn't good.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm guessing about rugosa. The cuttings were from my mother-in-law's roses in Timmins Ontario. Some were growing in a hedge and others came from large shrub like plants. I have three plants from about eight cuttings.

The rose with the black leaves looks a lot like my Hansa. We did have a hard freeze (-8C, 18F)so frost damage is a possibility. However, my other roses are fine. There weren't a lot of damaged leaves so I removed them.
