DA Harlow Carr / Carding Mill

I'm wanting to plant 3 of each of these roses on either side of a walkway. Do any of you fine gardeners have any experience with iether of these roses? I would so like to hear about their habits.

My Carding Mill is still in a pot, soon to be planted, but it is a beautiful rose and one of my favorites.

Carding Mill is a beautiful rose, but beware, it is a BS magnet! I am on year 3 with it and am anxious to see what it does this year regarding the blackspot.

Thank you to K S, Joh and Paula! Roses that didn’t make it here at the old place (that I can remember off the top of my head): Dames de Chenonceau; Versigny; Francois Blaise (sp?); Condesa de Sastago; Lady Emma Hamilton; and a couple others that I’d need to see the list to name. They have transplanted 100+ of our old collection to the new place already. It’s going to be a much smaller garden, because of water concerns. I was amazed at how some of the bigger teas (really huge plants) survived essentially being “bare rooted“ and just started shooting out growth from thick, old wood the second they were in the ground at the new place: Niles Cochet; Mons. Tillier; Mme. Antoine Mari; Old Town Novato; Clementina Carbonieri; Rosette Delizy and many others I can’t recall. Now, if we can only keep the deer pressure off of them. We have been spraying deer repellent regularly, and it remains to be seen if that’ll help

Which David Austin (DA, english) roses last longest in a vase?

I have found the English Roses to be a disappointment as cut flowers. It isn't just the short vase life, a lot of them have weak stems too that can't hold the large blooms upright for flower arranging. I'm moving away from them because of these faults. There are a few exceptions. Of the David Austin roses that I've grown FAIR BIANCA (white) and EVELYN (apricot pink) did the best as cut flowers, but good luck finding them in commerce. The hybrid tea ROUGE ROYALE (red) looks like an Austin rose but does extremely well as a cut flower. I can get blooms that last a week in a vase. GOLDEN CELEBRATION (yellow) is great if you live in an area not plagued by black spot. To condition the vase water add a pinch of sugar and one or two drops of bleach. Don't forget to recut the stems under water in the sink and then immediately plunk the roses into the vase. If air gets into the stem then it will form a bubble, travel up the stem, and collapse the bloom. Not a big deal if you only want one or two days of vase life, but I grow roses as much for cut flowers as garden specimens.

I cannot recommend highly enough both Scepter’d Isle and St. Cecilia. They are excellent & magnificent. I go more into depth in your new thread: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/5032402/scepterd-isle-st-cecilia-the-lady-gardener The Lady Gardener is still too new for me to comment, perhaps in 2-3 more years when people’s experiences with it start filtering through. In general it takes about 3-5 years for new DA introductions to really show their mettle in the USA. Especially the very double petaled varieties require a longer maturity period, growing their roots, and gaining strength to produce quality flowers.

@Erasmus YES! Hortico sends good bareroot plants budded on new seedlings (as rootstock) to prevent the spread of virus. Some varieties are bigger than others, but that’s due to the variety’s vigor. Because of their conscientious and transparent policy against spreading virus, Hortico is my preferred source for roses in general, but especially for David Austin roses. 30% of my roses gotten directly from DA-USA have been virused. They will replace them for you, but don’t actively hold their growers accountable for spreading virus, and so the vicious cycle continues indefinitely. I have a suspicion that some of their mother plants are virused, I don’t think it’s possible to find a clean plant of Constance Spry in North America unless it’s been indexed by UC Davis. Even though shipping is higher from Canada, Hortico’s DA’s are $19 each as opposed to DA-USA’s price of $28. I have no affiliation with Hortico, but support and promote them because I like the way they conduct business, and don’t want them to close permanently like Pickering. They’re a family owned mom & pop shop. On the other hand, I personally feel that David Austin, Inc. is rich enough as it is, and abhor their plant patent politics. They are my last resort if I can’t find it somewhere else.

I have 2 Carding Mills -- and ditto what roses4ever said.
It is beautiful, but a huge BS Magnet. It almost totally defoiliates for me because I don't stick to a 2 wks spray schedule. Mine will be in their 3rd year also, we'll see if it gets better. It is one of my worst bs roses, even worse than most hybrid teas. If you spray consistently you will love it.

I grow Harlow Carr and love it! I have promoted this rose several times here because I think it is a winner. Mine bloomed all summer, was totally disease-free and stayed bushy. The flowers come in clusters and although on the small side, they are charming. They have the look of an old rose. I didn't spray my HC at all, and even though others around it suffered from BS, it remained healthy as could be. It was very free-blooming.

Ya'll are the best. I'm not going to do Golden Celebration just because of BS and I'm sure that Carding Mill would be just as bad after hearing your reports. Thank ya'll so much. I'll have to find a different one. Any suggestions? In the same color range.

Celeste I'm really happy to hear the good news about Harlow Carr. I'm just disappointed that the flowers are small. I'm wondering if they will get bigger with age. I really like big smelly blooms on a beautiful bush.

Wondering who grows Carding Mill in Calfornia? This sure is a beauty but a spraying schedule in my yard is pretty darn unlikely.

I don't know if I got a dud of a bush, but I bought
Harlow Carr from DA Roses, and at first it bloomed
nicely in clusters and after that it went dormant.
The blooms we're nice, shallow cups, with a nice
scent, but almost on the miniature side. It is
healthy, but not blooming since May. I'll give it
more time, but it better get productive.
