Mandavila & Morning Glory yellow leaves???

Hi everyone!!!!

Recently I noticed aphids on our Mandavilla plant and someting eating the leaves on the morning glory vine. I sprayed both with a soapy water solution and now we have lots and lots of yellow leaves on both plants. We did have a lot of rain in the past week, however when I checked the pot the mandavila was in it seemed to be dry.

Any suggestions, how concernded should I be??

I know it has been a wierd summer already, I have already lost a beautiful Cardinal plant and no one seems to know why. I just started to shrivel up and droop over. It is in the other side of the beds across the yard?????

Mandavilla's do not like water, they like to be completely dry before they are watered again. I would suggest pulling off the yellow leaves and just give it some time. Who knows you might of just got to much rain in the spot you have your pot and not enough drainage. Also watch for powdery mildew!!

I am having trouble with my mandevilla, also. It was doing wonderfully, climbing & blooming like crazy. Then a few yellow leaves, so I slacked up on watering it. Then it started to look droopy and dried up, so I started watering it regularly again. No change, still dried up and droopy. Then I had a thought. Last week I put a Gloriosa Lily bulb in the ground beside the mandevilla. There vines are sparse so it was recommended to place them with another plant on a trellis to fill in. Well, I also remember reading that they were poisonous and can break your skin out if you touch the bulb. Now I am wondering if it is poisoning my mandevilla! Is that even possible? It was doing so well before I put that bulb in there!

I love growing morning glories and mine have been blooming lately. I always get some leaves that turn yellow and brown, etc. As long as I get my beautiful flowers I don't mind too much. They can always get discarded. As a matter of fact, my vines grow so vigorously that I pull some of the big green leaves away so the blossoms will be more exposed. I think it is just probably a common occurence with Morning Glories.

I typically grow my morning glories outside so I really can't say if this is normal for indoor seedlings. I have noticed my outdoor seedling having leaves stuck together but I've never helped them a long. I'm no expert but considering it has only been a few days I would take a hands off wait and see approach while continuing to give them plenty of sunlight. Let us know how they turn out.

I wonder if you didn't get a stray seed of a different type of morning glory in your package. I'm growing a fancy type this year, rather star-shaped double purple blooms with white edges. The cotyledons looked fairly usual, except more yellow green than my volunteer Grandpa Otts or the Flying Saucers I started. But all the leaves on this particular type are wrinkly at first and shaped more like maple leaves. Hard to say about yours, but maybe it's just a different type, not sick.

I was just thinking, it's probably not a drainage problem. Last year I grew morning glories in pots in the area with the trellises (photo above). This year I removed the pots and added the trellises. The morning glories had seeded from last year and grew up from the ground. The vines you see on the left are coming up in the sunniest spot. This year I have some in the pot with the white trellis (see second photo) that I transplanted from the other spot and they're doing great in the sunny area. I hope your morning glories grow this year in the pots! If there's sunlight a decent portion of the day they should be good. It's the all day shade they don't like.

I can't help with the Mandevilla, but I know from experience that Morning Glory thrive on water. A lot of water. We have them growing all over our fences, and I make a point to water them everyday or they pout and dry up. They'll grow at least six inches in a day if watered deeply and often.
