Sprinkler/Spray head choice question

Well, we have just purchased a home that, as usual, has a long and narrow strip of lawn between the sidewalk and the road. The currently intalled sprinkler heads (2) are broken. They are installed quite close to each other, in the middle of this 1.5 foot by 40 foot area. I assume that one is meant to water in one direction and the other in the opposite direction.

I need to figure out what type of (I assume) pop-up, non-rotary, head and/or nozzle to install to cover this long skinny area without wasting a bunch of water on the sidewalk and street. Is there a style that waters a long and narrow area in one direction?

Or am I really off base??? If so, what do you recommend?

Hi Slotshot,

Yes there is. There are specific one that spray a rectangle pattern with the head in the middle or on the sides. Look at the pattern shapes on the store display or containers. All the major brands carry them. The local nurseries, irrigation stores or big box stores have them. Match the brand of your sprinkler head body and all you have to do is unscrew the old head and screw on the new one. Replace the little filter part under the head, a new head will come with a new filter. Adjust the spray distance by adjusting the center little screw. Clockwise is less. That is about it. Gl Aloha.

If you are looking for a nozzle to replace the ones there that will cover an area of 1.5' wide and 20' long per nozzle, you wont find one. None of the major brands make it. I would suggest grabbing the largest throwing nozzle called and end strip (1.5' wide x 15' long) and replacing the screen and nozzle per lehua13's suggestion. If you want it perfectly covered, you will need that portion of your system torn up and redesigned. I suggest doing your part to stimulate the economy and hiring a reputable sprinkler tech to take a look at the feasibilty of it.

Has the problem sprinkler head worked properly before? I'm no expert, but here's what I could think of as being the problem (in order from easist to hardest to investigate and fix). 1. The head needs adjusting. Go to the manufacturer's website and find the instructions on how to adjust your model of sprinkler head. They usually have an e-mail address where you can ask questions if you don't find the answer. 2. The head is clogged or broken. Flushing the system usually prevents clogging, but it can still happen. Where I live, the city replaced the water meters. In so doing, they introduce all kinds of muck into the water supply. I also had an earwig crawl inside one of my fixtures and clog it up. They seem to like water. You could try swapping the head with one of your other ones or with a new one. This means digging. If you swap, and the other one works fine but the problem one is still "pissing" in its new position, then you probably have a bad head. 3. There's a clog in your pipe, or the pipe is broken. I'd look along the ground where the pipe runs to see if you notice any wet spots. You could dig up the head, remove the head, flush the pipe. Let's hope it isn't #3.

Is the head in question a spray head (as opposed to a rotary head)? Is it the last head on the line? Have you removed the head and flushed the line? If not, do so - and disassemble the head, cleaning the screen, nozzle, and body of the head before reassembly. BK

to answer your first question it does sound like your first zone is on a float. your second question is possibly simpler than you think. if you have the volume and pressure to extend the exsisting zone that is your simplest solution. if not you will need to add electric valves as well as a timer to both zones. if you have further questions photos of your assembly will help us give you the best advice.

Yes, while there are "strip" sprinkler heads, the narrowest area I've ever seen one of them cover is 4 feet wide.
