John Deere CDI Ignitor question

I have a John Deere 425 tractor with failing ignitor module.

I am looking for a used one as cannot afford over $200 for new from Deere.

This has the Kawasaki 20hp liquid twin engine and wondered if the Nippon-Denso unit is the same as the Deere unit as far as advance curves etc. I know the Kaw. Mule uses same engine with the Denso unit.

Any help finding a used good ignitor for my tractor would be appreciated.

Don,

Are you sure it's the ignitor module? Oftentimes it's the Time Delay Module that goes on these tractors and the fix is only ~ $14.25.

1 Don't sweat it 2 It is easy to pull the rear wheels and gears to clean and lube +plus you can hopefully free the fitting up to get lube in the pivot 3 See #1 The coating you put on , no matter how it was prepped- will be sand blasted off. been there, tried that exact same thing on a new aluminum housing. 4 Just so it firmly engages. Standard cable lube is fine. deere.com may have an owners manual to cover this more precisely. 5 5 gear sets inside selected w/ shift keys. 6 Yes 7 Standard care will allow the engine to last for longer than ever required. Transmissions on these can get water in them for those than blast them w/ a hose to get clean. If the input shaft bearing seems ok, no signs of having been owned by Mr clean and the cable seems to actuate smoothly, the trans should be fine. If you want a yucky job, pull the case sometime and clean it up and re lube. Unfortunately, this year seems to be the demise of these. In my world , I've condemned 3 to death from housings starting to pit through. One wasn't too bad, but needed a clutch- which is not worth it for a machine that is decaying. Enjoy, as they don't make them like they used to.

OK...I just chased this down on my Argo with the same/similar engine. I had spark on a single cylinder. So I assumed the igniter or a coil. Swapped coils and the suspect coil worked after swapping...so igniter? NOPE. I was just about to buy a $200 igniter (ignition box) and wigged the connectors and it kicked up my RPM. The spade connectors corrode. I pulled each one, cleaned and flowed a little solder on them and it runs like new again. Yes...my issue was corroded connectors. My connectors all had crimps that looked perfectly fine...but had intermittent bad connections after 18 years. You could also cut the connector and solder and shrink wrap it you aren't good with a pick and small connectors. I had pulled my igniter circuit board out and it looked brand new. Wiggle and twist those connectors with engine running...if your RMP jumps up...you have the same problem I did.

Now we may be getting somewhere. Coil # 21121-2069 is for "AS&BS" engines, while coil# 21121-2086 is for DS&ES engines. The older "AS&BS" engines use the external ignitor module while the "newer" DS&ES engines use a coil with internal "triggering" circuity, a self-contained unit. I'll order the 2086 coil & hope this ends my "Frustration". In the expectation of this outcome I will thank you now for all your help & effort in this dilemma. Sears was sold out to K-Mart, which formed a parent company that operates both KMart and Sears. I would never buy any large purchase from KMart - no matter what name they put on the store. People have to let go of the idea that the stores they buy at have anything to do with the product itself. There are only a handful of appliance manufacturers out there no matter what the label says. There are only a handful or less carpet mills no matter what the label says. The RETAILER IS NOT the MANUFACTURER. You are not walking into a car dealership. You are buying a re-badged item made by 3 or 4 companies. Home Depot's carpet is not inferior to Mohawk's. The installation on the other hand may be. It depends. It doesn't matter where you buy. The MANUFACTURER'S warranty is the same. What most of you are looking for is service. Therein lies the rub. Regional service companies have replaced the independent repairmen because people want the extended warranty which is basically an insurance policy, nothing more and nothing less. People have to know their limitations and do the math for themselves on whether service contracts are worth it. For us a service contract on a washer or fridge is. A dishwasher or dryer isn't. Too easy to fix or replace. I don't buy expensive DWs. Certainly not for a garbage disposal. I have a large gas range. Bought it online. It is probably no longer under warranty. The manufacturer has sold the name to a "Higher End" badge. Doesn't matter. I chose one with no bells or whistles in the way of electronics. No timers, not even a clock. The only electrical is the thermostat are the thermostats and the ignitors. Simple plumbing. 80 years from now someone can fix it or even build a part if needed just like they do grandmas' stoves and old classic cars. Quality control has indeed gone way down. That is true. But if it isn't right you do w something about it right then and there. If it means choosing another product that is what you do. We regulary void the warranty on most stuff anyway because I am always wanting to make it better. We rebuild stuff to fit so I don't have to pay for custom. Most recently it was a heavy duty wire basket for our deep pantry. bought it online and had to redo the brackets since it was intended for a closet system. If one is not good at do it your self perhaps the answer is to have a good plumber and electrician. or a good independent appliance guy. They are still around and be happy to give good service. Keep your parts list and know what you are buying.

Yes, it must be the ignitor. I've isolated almost everything else. It still runs on the right cylinder but the left loses spark when warm. I can mow all day below 60 degrees, but about 20 minutes on a 80 degree day.
Swaped coils and pulsors, still left goes dead. If the delay relay would kill all I would think.Correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Still looking for a replacement.

No time delay on a 445, so sorry butch.

It's very common for them to start cutting spark when hot if they go out on a 425 though. I would agree I would think it would affect both coils, but that might not be the case. The delay module feeds the ignition module power, not the coils, so who knows what the mod does when starved for power. If you get yourself a schematic, you can bypass the delay mod and give power directly to the ignition module to see if that's your problem.

Thanks engine tech, I probably should look at the owners manuel a little better. Don't know if this will help but my ole Onan that I put an electronic conversion on started only running on one cylinder till it warmed up, then ran fine. Traced it down to the electronic conversion was going bad. It'd been on there for about 8 years so I guess I really can't complain.

Well my left cylinder ignitor problem FINALLY went from intermittent to permanent. I still refuse to give John Deere almost 300 bucks for a 50 dollar item. SOOO I cut the wires from the left pulsor and coil, wired in an old CDI ignition module from a 1975 Ford. It worked great. I mowed most of my 5 Acres today and it was 85 degrees out. The only negative I notice is I have lost the delayed shutdown on the left cylinder and causes an occasional backfire when turning the key off. I can live with that.

Could it be that the ignitor is my problem as well? My John Deere 425 will no longer start, it just 'clicks'. It also backfires while mowing every once in awhile. It used to be if I would just wait a few minutes then it would start after 'grinding' for awhile. Now it won't start at all. --Carl

cshepe, you might want to check your battery and cables, as those will affect starting. Plus, a loose or bad connection could cause a momentary loss of power, and thus a backfire. Your problem is different from the original poster.

I found this ignitor on www.JEGS.com do a search using the Denoso Part number 131800-0131 It was $71.99. The top # is the Kawasaki part number the bottom one is the Denoso#

Hello guys. I am told my John Deere may have same issue. A friend of mine took the spark plug wires off the spark plugs, he put a screw driver in the place to see if it was getting an electrical feed, and nothing. So he thinks it's the magneto as well. I am trying learn more about all these issues, so hopefully I can fix some of it myself. So I need to ask how do you check the Time Delay Module to know if that is what is bad? Also, are either of those issues an easy fix? Or would it require a tractor shop?

Having the same problem with my 425, runs a few minutes and quits, no spark on either plug. Should I be checking the delay module also?
