Craftsman lawn tractor blades intermittent cut-out

I have a craftsman lawn tractor 15.5 hp 46" deck. I read a couple other forums and got the blades working again (bad pto switch). Mowed the lawn for about 45mins and the blades started to cut out and back on. The funny thing was that the blades didn't always stop completely but sometimes they would. I checked my battery with the blades on with a volt ohm meter and I did have 12.5 volts. I need some advise as to weather the cluch needs adjustment or if it's shot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Model number is 917.256600

Sounds like an intermittent electrical interruption (possibly a problem with a ground wire), or perhaps your PTO air gap needs adjusting. Go down to the post titled "John Deere STX38 PTO wont engage" and check the link provided and also mownie's reply.

Sears 48"s typically have all 3 blades matching- all that I've seen anyways. Are you saying that the center blade doesn't have the star? The outside blade will do more work as it is handling the cuttings and debris from the other 2 blades- so more wear isn't abnormal. The sand/ dirt the blades pick-up seems to wear the sails down more quickly- so people w/ sandy soil get it bad and soon.Of course, rocks don't actually help. When servicing your deck, I would suggest removing it so it can be cleaned and inspected properly as well. Once you've done it once or twice, you will find it easy. Roll off the belt, lower the deck, remove the front bracket and the other few hanger pins and your done. Just don't curse me the first time you reinstall it....

Mok and Bill 1st off Thank You I thought that i had it licked when i noticed the Gov was alittle sticky but that wasn't it and Bill it has a new diapham in it i put a brand new kit in it so my guess is what You mentioned about the breather i noticed all the lines Fuel/vaccume were secured tight except for the one that comes out of the breather so i trimmed it back and secured it with a worm clamp i was wondering if a loose vaccume line might cause this? maybe the breather? it can't be a leaky float or it would spit all the time it just floods out under load in heavy grass the reason that i thought it might be the breather is because when i seal off the breather line it will start back up... thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I doubt it is bad gas but it may be something rolling around in the gas tank blocking the tank outlet part time. I would also check the vacuum line running from the engine block to the bottom of the fuel pump on the front of the carb (when looking at the Intake manifold side of the engine) Is the gas tank outlet above or below the carb inlet? I know you said he put in a new carb kit but I would still remove the hex head plug on the lower right side of the carb and see what comes out. Should be clean gas, no water or crap. Walt Conner

I have a similar sears mower (12HP/38") with the same blades. Mine cuts fine removing the offset blades. I guess sears was selling them with these blades for a while.

I once asked a local repair tech about some of the problems that had been brought to him. Some of the "won't run" probs: no spark plug intalled, no battery installed, NO GASOLINE in tank, battery cable disconnected. "Won't cut": no blade, no belt, did not know how to engage PTO, deck so clogged with grass that blade couldn't turn.

My motto has become: Check the obvious things first.

OP - make sure you ain't bouncing up/down too far on thet seat.. such can cause the elect PTO to kick out...
