Vintage Wheel Horse Questions

I just won an 854 on Ebay. These were introduced in 1964 and apparently were the last model with the rounded hood (except for the Lawn Ranger series).

Does anyone (Deerslayer) know how long this model was made? I don't have the VIN number yet.

I assume this a short frame. Does anyone know if the 3-blade 36" mowers will work on a short frame, or does this require the 2-blade geared deck.

On an unrelated Wheel Horse question - does anyone have for sale the old style front hitch for Charger/Raider/Electro long frame tractors? On these tractors it is two pieces that bolt to either side of the frame. From about 72 onward they went to a single u-shaped hitch.

Congrats on your purchase!!!

The 854 was made only in 1964. It has an 8hp Kohler electric start engine and a 4 speed manual tranny. Below are the attachments that will fit an 854.

Amazing what they could do with only 8 HP back in 1964. Then again we were able to put a man on the moon back in the 60's too!

Deerslayer, thanks for the info - I knew you would come through. Now, anyone know if any of the 36" rotary mowers listed are 3-blade units?

Under the axle oil seal is a retaining-clip and probably some thin shims. Sounds like clips have become dislodged or broken. These clips and shims prevent axle from sliding back and forth. Good news is if he has washers in there then he was able to remove wheels. Removing wheels is usually the hardest part. On my 1985 Horse, clip is part #9511, seal is #9609. Yours may or may not be the same. Verify if you can find a parts breakdown specific to your model and year. Do not hit axle with hammer to remove wheel, if wheel is stuck, remove spirol pins in axle and go till until wheel becomes loose. Use penetrating oil as needed. The clips were probably broken during the first wheel removal process, probably by striking it in an attempt to remove wheel. REJ2.

Keep your eye on ebay, though parts for these are rare. I think there may still be rebuilders in larger cities that could rebuild it for you, assuming you have one. But every day more of these sorts of businesses fad. I have decided that regardless of price I just can't justify any of the D series tractors given my tiny "first ring suburb" lot. Have fun with yours. Deerslayer is right, these are the draft horses! Good luck.

Hi - I only saw enough of the mower to say that it had a nicely rounded hood... no sharp edges and having taken a look at the motor - it was located up towards the front of the mower... a nice big beefy looking muffler was protruding from the right front of the tractor. from what i could see - it looked quite a bit like this unit. http://whtractor.15.forumer.com/index.php?showtopic=918 I want it ... its kinda promised to someone else... But hes basically looking for a horizontal crank motor... im hoping I can give him one of my horizontal crank motors - and try and keep this wheel horse in mostly one piece. I need mule for the yard and the Sear (god bless its soul) is not going to last forever... I guess if I could get the mower - minus motor - I could put my 5 HP Horizontal Briggs in it... (or get a little diesel - if i ever win the lottery). Thanks guys - Im gonna give him a call right now before i forget.

This is a common complaint. These were designed back when people mowed closer to the ground. The first thing is to be sure it is properly leveled. If you measure the distance to the ground from the blade at both the front and back the front, it should be about 1/8 to no more than 1/4 lower in the front. If not there is an adjustment towards the back of the deck (a threaded rod) If that is OK about the only thing to do is to replace the wheels with ones that are a bit larger. Once you do that you need to re-check the level. BTW, in case you did not know this, this is a very sturdy tractor and you can get all sorts if attachments for it. Best of luck

The Wheelhorse concept of parts interchangeability over time cannot be equaled.

The only thing I can think compares is the promise that Kawasaki made when it produced the original ZG 1000 Concours Sport Tourer. They committed to building the same bike over a number of years to allow the aftermarket to commit to the design.

I bought one in 1987--the bike was still made, basically unchanged, until this year. It has never become an "antique" bike, it is probably the best bike for the dollar you could get. Fast, powerful, and maneuverable.

I have never regretted buying a Wheelhorse Classic--even though it was expensive. It is worth every dollar I paid.

They are all 2-blade including the 42" deck.
