The Low-Down on Black Spot
Comments (36)Let me start by saying I am a relative newbie to hybrid tea roses, and I don't claim to be an expert in any way. But I live in a very rural area with a lot of "old timers" who live by the Farmer's Almanac are happy to share their tips and tricks. And more often than not, they seem to work. I'm in the Ohio River Valley, and black spot can be a real problem here. It made my HTs almost unbearable to look at. They kept growing and even flowering, but lost many if not most of their leaves...and it spread from one bush to another almost like a plague. I was ready to give up. But a very old man at our local feed store gave me these instructions, and it helped immensly. He told me to throw corn meal around all the bushes as far as the leaves can drop, and then spray them heavily with a milk and baking soda mixture....about half water, half milk and 1/3 of a box of soda in a gallon jug. I did the cornmeal, sprayed every other day or so with the milk/baking soda...especially after rain, and picked off and discarded any fallen or infected leaves. Might sound crazy, but it made a big difference. It didn't totally eliminate the problem, but it definately made a very noticable improvement fairly quickly. Can't say that it would have made a lasting improvement though because a hellacious ice storm pretty much devastaed the whole garden this past winter. Either way, it's cheap, it's easy and organic, and it seemed to work really well during the growing season. So just take it for what it's worth and good luck with it all. I plan to do the same thing this year when I replant what Old Man Winter destroyed. :)...See MoreTall cutting roses in weird spot
Comments (14)It is possible Michael. Do you get enough rain? Lot of showers and no sun can lead to that kind of growth on FM. We, on the other hand, donÂt get rain (3 good soaking rain from May till today) so my FM also produces some weird growth, such as short flower stalks instead the nice long stems I got used to. In other HTs that are not in full sun I noticed that they developed horizontal or arching laterals during hot and cloudy days that lasted sometimes for a week or longer but without these clouds giving us a drop of rain. Weird year and I am so fed up with these hopelessly hot and humid days. OK, I stop whining - at least I have AC....See MoreAdvice request - rooted jade cutting with black spots
Comments (3)Tyler, Can you post a picture of it? I had one do what sounds like yours, but I know it was from too much sun and over watering. It would help the others to help you if you can post a pic. JoJo...See MoreRose bush with "black spot", should I cut it to ground?
Comments (10)My advice is for you to follow the directions given by Cecily, Jacqueline, and Seil. The bush is in a weakened state, no further cutting at this time please, even the blackened stem. You can remove it later after the bush recovers. Begin a regular spray program for the control of black spot now, and continue all growing season long. Spray all the leafless stems, even the black one ASAP. The bush should start fo leaf out very soon. Continue spraying every 10 days to 2 weeks there after, if using the Bayer fungicide. The Bayer fungicide works extremely well for me. I highly recommend it. I have not found the organic controls that I have tried effective, but I have not tried them all. Time your spraying carefully. Foliage can be damaged easily if spray is misapplied. Then the good you are doing is cancelled out. Never spray a thirsty bush, in the heat of the day, or when the temp. is 80 degrees F., or higher at spraying time or rises above 80 for a period of one hour after spraying. If you spray when the temp. is 78, and it gets up to 85 in just a half hour's time, that's no good. Spraying in the early morning or during dusk is always best. I could not grow roses to any degree of success in my garden where the black spot pressure is intense and relentless from spring to fall, without a regular spray program....See Morecharleney
